HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 11-25-14CULTURE AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD MEETING MINUTES NOVEMBER 25, 2014 A Meeting of the Culture and Leisure Services Board was held on November 25th, 2014, at the Cape Canaveral Public Library, 201 Polk Avenue, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The meeting was called to Order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairperson Gene Petre. The Secretary called the roll. MEMBERS PRESENT Gene Petre Chairperson Doug Raymond Vice Chairperson John Dattilo Barry Schoenholz Marlene Woodside Maureen Michel Mickie Kellum OTHERS PRESENT Gustavo Vergara Molly Thomas Leisure Services Director Board Secretary ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1. Approval of Special Meeting Minutes of September 23, 2014 Motion by Mr. Shoenholz, seconded by Mrs. Woodside to approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of September 23, 2014 as written. Vote on the motion carried unanimously. 2. Staff Reports Mr. Vergara reviewed his Staff Report and summarized Leisure Services activities/updates as follows: Manatee Park pedway paving project is complete; GLE Facilities & Environmental Consultants was selected for Banana River Park pavilion; the City hosted its first Oyster Mat workshop at Manatee Sanctuary Park, open only to children of local schools & members of BCSO PAL, UCF likes the venue and intends on hosting quarterly workshops open to the general public; discussion of December events: Friday Fest, Vintage is the band and the City is operating the beverage stand; Light -up Cape Canaveral is employing a new format focusing on the lighting, new laser lights to be included, as well as carolers, Cape View Choir, refreshments, and Santa Claus escorted by the CCVFD; Reindeer Run being organized by PAL; Parcnt's Night Out will be offered at the Youth Center, $5 a child includes food, movies and entertainment for kids from 6-10pm; Movie in the Park to be held on Dec 19th. Mr. Petre thanked Mr. Vergara for his report. OLD BUSINESS: Mr. Petre asked if the surf and kayak franchise opportunity had been put out for public bids. Gustavo confirmed and stated that the bids were awarded based on the quality of the proposals and the locality of the individual businesses, favoring those that were located within the City. Mr. Petre, Ms, Woodside, Mr. Raymond and Mr. Shoenholz had positive remarks regarding the improvements at Manatee Sanctuary Park. NEW BUSINESS: Ms, Kellum asked if there were any developments regarding her suggestion of a Jazz festival event. Mr. Vergara indicated that he and the promoter are currently working on a financial profile and a proposal will be ready in December. Mr. Petre announced the organization of a Horseshoe Tournament for the Founders Day event. Mrs. Woodside suggested the introduction of an International Art Show. Mr. Petre advised the organization of a committee for the event and requested that a detailed proposal be put before the board. Mr. Shoenholz inquired as to the City's policy on hitting golf balls in the parks. Mr. Vergara referenced Article 54 and stated signs will be posted following the completion of the City's branding initiative. Mr. Petre inquired about feedback from BCSO regarding dogs on the beach. Mr. Vergara responded that BCSO indicated that violators are ticketed when caught, Mr, Petre reminded members that the next meeting of the Board is Tuesday, January 27, 2015.
