HomeMy WebLinkAboutMore email from the city historian Fwd Fuller Mounds marker and Bob Gross QR codes etc Re Number Assignment Request for Artesia Post Office Re FL Master Site File TRS S (2)Angela and esteemed city officials,
Here's a recent email from me out to several organizations. As you will
notice we started talking about the historic marker again. It's kinda
like when you start talking about one thing you end up talking about
another thing too.
Now from your end. Did Mr. Baugher or Cumberland Farms comment on
anything recently? I saw he arrived late at the meeting yesterday so I
presume he discussed something regarding his project with somebody at
the city level. Did he say anything about allowing an archaeological
survey before they break ground?
I wish he and I could talk like we used to but he has got it in his head
that I
hate him and wish him bad. Quite the opposite, I respect him as a savvy
businessman and realize we just have a different perspective on this
issue.

No it is repairable, Alan. We needn't hash out the Fuller mound marker
situation as I think I have all the wording now to everyone's liking. I
can go ahead and submit it. It's just such a small park for a big
marker. I was trying to get my city to spring for a smaller marker with
a QR code but they weren't for it and maybe QR codes have fallen out of
use now.
Are you finding any use of QR codes in use for historical trails? I was
introduced to it by a historian from Key West.
It seemed novel approach to get people interesting in following
historical sites.
I am still on the fence on the Fuller Mounds marker. If I presented the
application again do you think it would go through? Meaning is there
still funding?
But I do have a geocache there and it is the Landmarks guide.
BTW: I have to forward all this email to the city clerk as it is
official
city historian business. So be nice. :-)

Pedro Menendez de Aviles left mirrors (and other gifts) in the
abandoned Ais villages as he marched south from Cape Canaveral to the

Bob Gross is Mr. IRAS and is an unofficial
"commissioner/chairman emeritus" so to speak.
I did archaeology with ACI (Archaeological Consultants Inc,
Sarasota) in 1999 under Joan Demming and Elizabeth Horvath as principal
investigators.
They were following up on investigations by New South Associates
(Georgia).
Jim Miller (former head of SHPO) did a report on Merritt Island
National Refuge, of which I have a hard copy.
As for archeo work done in the 70s and 80's your best bet is Bud
Knoderer (deceased). But Bob Gross would be a good source of info. Are
you and Bob Gross estranged from each other? Do you need an
interlocutor? I'd be glad to help facilitate the flow of info from
Gross to Osborne if you guys are at odds with each other.
let me know,
Alan

Okay that solves that (see fwd) So I'm still learning.
So next step, anybody with BCHC have good communication and
relations with IRAS?
I'm glad to see Alan is thick skinned, as there seems to be many
thin skinned and overly sensitive people
in the historical and archaeological community. Not a judgment,
just an observation hey?
Let's move ahead and get some more good stuff accomplished.Tell
me who was doing a lot of archaeology
work back in the 1970's and 80's in Cape Canaveral. Promise we
won't talk about the metals that may have been transported by the
Europeans that may have ended up here. I'm curious about mirrors and
geometric shapes.
Ais must of been enthralled with the selfies they got with the
mirrors, I think I would if I had never seen a mirror
before. Imagine discovering your reflection in a glass for the
first time.

Hi Ray,
What you attached are guidelines for completing the FMSF
historic structure form and record of the assignment of a site number to
the post office. Those aren’t documents that are sent to the site file
or to compliance, though they are often sent out (to people who want to
record a site/structure and submit documentation to FMSF).
The site number for BR1936 was requested by Nash in 2006, who
authored the 2006 report and completed the archaeological site form. It
doesn’t seem to have been recorded in the FMSF prior to that date. It
is possible that other people had done work there prior to 2006, but if
so it wasn’t submitted to the site file. The site file only contains
information that has been submitted by archaeologists, consultants,
architects, etc. – we are not a comprehensive repository for all
archaeology completed in the state or for all reports.
Good luck,
Tim

Hello,
This is the forwarded application process for another site that
I applied BR02570 to be put into the Master File.
Are the applications not part of the public record requests
procedures? Somebody well before Nash came onto the scene must have
submitted and application to be put in. Are you saying BR01936 got it's
start with Nash and the Carbo Verde project?
See attachments. Where are the BR01936 counterparts?
I appreciate your time, so, I will CC this and confer with my
contacts with BCHC
(Brevard County Historical Commission) for their expertise in
adding sites to the Master File here in Brevard County. I'm sure they
added quite a few already.

Hi, did you get this okay? I should have put the date in the
file. This little post office was built in 1952. Can that be added? Or
do I need to complete the form again?
