Regarding bringing the Arts to Cape Canaveral
The process of attempting to interest artists in forming an
association of any nature and to encourage the " The Arts in
Cape Canaveral" has been a journey I must share with you my
most recent experience and possibly some of you are aware I
tried to interest CBAA (Central Brevard Art Association) when I
learned the current City Hall will be available sometime in the
not too distant future as the City Officials move to new yet to
be constructed building. Of course there was no offer of the
City Hall building, my thought was to first see if there was
interest as they CBAA have complained about the building they
are working within at present as it is the old Rockledge Police
Department's equipment and evidence room and has only one
window. CBAA has been organized since 1960 so they are
reliable, further it seemed a logical move for them as it gave
them plenty of time and for the City and the Association to
possibly make a deal on rent etc. for the City Hall.
it took some time to set a date when Mayor Randels and the
Associations Board of Dir. could all meet at the same time and
place but finally accomplished and we met at City Hall where
Mayor Randels was very helpful to show them all around the
building included each room where walls could be moved,
sufficient restrooms and all the advantages the building and the
geography ( Cruise traffic and tourists) could be an advantage.
Following the City building we then took them to other
locations they might find to their liking, and gave them a tour of
Cape Canaveral.
They seemed to really like the idea when we parted. l waited a
week and called the President when she then told me they
would not be interested any further and here it becomes very
difficult for me to put into words, first, she said the timing
could possibly go wrong considering they must sign a contract
with Rockledge to keep the building they now occupy, and they
do not want a Cape Canaveral address. So there it is and 1
really thought those days of our bad reputation were behind us
but obviously not.
There is this to also consider, they are mostly all very very
mature people and moving could be a serious consideration.
A very good suggestion was made we start with the children
from Cape View elementary I think that's a great idea in that
we will only be successful starting from within our City but the
next day I read in Florida Today Cape View Elementary would
be on the agenda to close if the School Board does not get the
tax increase they desire.
I have no plans to work on this program anytime in the near
future.
With respect to all my fellow Board Members
M. Woodside
