AGENDA CALL TO ORDER: ROLL CALL: PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: Any member of the public may address any items that do not appear on the agenda and any agenda item that is listed on the agenda for final official action by the Culture and Leisure Services Board excluding public hearing items which are heard at the public hearing portion of the meeting, ministerial items (e.g., approval of agenda, minutes, information items) and quasi-judicial or emergency items, Citizens are encouraged to limit their comments to three (3) minutes. The Culture and Leisure Services Board will not take any action under the "Public Participation" section of the agenda. The Culture and Leisure Services Board may schedule items not on the agenda as regular items and act upon them in the future. ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1. Persons with disabilities needing assistance to participate in the proceedings should contact Molly Thomas, City of Cape Canaveral Leisure Services (868-1226) 48 hours in advance of the meeting, CULTURE AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD MEETING MINUTES JULY 22, 2014 A Meeting of the Culture and Leisure Services Board was held on July 22, 2014, at the Cape Canaveral Public Library, 201 Polk Avenue, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The meeting was called to Order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairperson Gene Petre. The Secretary called the roll. MEMBERS PRESENT Gene Petre Chairperson John Dattilo Barry Schoenholz Marlene Woodside Maureen Michel (arrived late due to weather) MEMBERS ABSENT Doug Raymond Stephanie Robinson OTHERS PRESENT Gustavo Vergara Fran Norman Leisure Services Director Board Secretary ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1. Approval of Special Meeting Minutes of Mav 13, 2014 Motion by Mr. Woodside, seconded by Mr. Schoenholz to approve the Special Meeting Minutes of May 13, 2014 as written. Vote on the motion carried unanimously. 2. Staff Reports Mr. Vergara reviewed his Staff Report and summarized Leisure Services activities/updates as follows: interior painting of racquetball courts scheduled for September 8 with approximate completion date of September 12; contractor has been selected for Manatee Sanctuary Park parking lot paving project; positive feedback being received on new Farmers Market day; the success of the 3V3 basketball league; the recommendation that members view Friday Fest/Farmers Market videos on City website; holes in Youth Center walls caused by a termite infestation have been patched; water fountain problem at Youth Center caused by ants has been repaired; termite perimeter is now in place; scored well on projects submitted to FRDP and FIND for funding, but fell a bit short — projects being restructured for future submittal; rationale for scheduling Back to School Jamboree on Wednesday, August 13, 2014; and the success of Summer Carnp. Mr. Vergara thanked the Board for its assistance with Chapter 54, which passed both readings. Fee Schedule is anticipated to go to City Council in August as one Resolution for the entire City. Mr. Petre thanked Mr. Vergara for his report. OLD BUSINESS: • PAL Program: Update/status provided to members. Banana River Park Playground: Because the City was not awarded the grant and feedback from the public, it will not be relocated to Manatee Sanctuary Park. Motion by Mr. Dattilo, seconded by Ms. Woodside that the Culture and Leisure Services Board and the City Council allocate money for the creation of a playground at Manatee Sanctuary Park. Vote on the motion carried unanimously. 6 3V3 Basketball League: Update/status provided to members. e Reindeer Run Date/T-Shirt Issue: Event is second Saturday in December; Explanation of T-Shirt Issue provided to members. Mr. Petre reminded members that the next meeting of the Culture and Leisure Services Board is Tuesday, September 23, 2014. District - Permitting of Banana River Park • Brevard County School Board & Brevard County Parks and Recreation - Cherrie Down • Tournament Organizer - Fall Classic Racquetball Tournament • Pre -Construction Meeting for Manatee Sanctuary Park Paving Project Athletic Leagues Monday night kickball continues the season with raid make ups and will start playoffs in two weeks. A-1 tennis is currently taking new players with hopes to start a fall league on September 22. A-2 tennis league is in the third week with many new players. It is the largest league we have hosted, boasting a 14 player roster. A-1 Racquetball League headed into playoffs and plans on starting the championship in two weeks. Wednesday night kickball finished up its season. The championship game between Beachside Bombers and Who's Sober was very intense. Who's Sober outlasted the Beachside Bombers taking the winning title. A-2 Thursday League continued with its ongoing schedule and has only one rain out match to make up. Leisure Services is now registering teams for Thursday night softball, as well as Monday and Wednesday Kickball. Staff has already registered new teams and is looking forward to new leagues starting towards the end of September. Special Projects • Manatee Sanctuary Park: Paving continues on schedule. Slabs for the bike racks and dumpster container poured. All concrete curbing and center island has been completed. Racquetball Courts: Painting of interiors begun and should be completed by 9/15. Friday Fest August's Friday Fest was well attended and went off nicely despite many doubts about the weather. The featured band was Spanks and the proceeds from the liquor sales benefited the Viera Soccer Club. September's Friday Fest was rained -out. Farmers Market The Farmers Market continues to grow in popularity thanks to its new day and location. Fresh produce, baked goods and handmade arts and crafts are all available to the public. www.brevardfarmersmarkets. corn. Movie in the Park The August Movie in the Park was rained out. The originally scheduled movie, "The Nut Job", will instead be featured as September's Movie in the Park. Summer Camp After 11 weeks at full capacity, Summer Camp ended on August l5th. This year's program boasted greater attendance than last summer and the field trips were a welcome addition for both parents and campers. Back to School Jamboree This year was a huge success and because it was held in combination with Cape View's registration, attendance was higher than ever before. 200 backpacks were stuffed with school supplies and provided to families in need. Parents were very thankful to the City and children were excited to receive a brand new backpack. BCSO PAL and City volunteers helped stuff the backpacks the night before and assisted in handing them out throughout the event. We are grateful to BCSO for its contribution towards the purchase of the backpacks. Social Media In addition to our Facebook Account, the City has also created a Twitter page as an avenue for citizens and tourists to connect with city and learn about its programs and events.
