HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 03-21-1989 MINUTES CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY BOARD MARCH 21 , 1989 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Grady called the meeting to order at 4: 06PM. Board members present in addition to Chm. Grady were Pat StengleinnV.P. , Hilma Goff and Ernestine Butte. Also present were Mrs. Escapa, Library Director and Leo Nichols, City Manager. II. MINUTES Mrs . Butte moved the minutes of the February 14th be accepted as presented. 2nd and carried. III. DIRECTORS REPORT: Mrs. Escapa again expressed her appreciation for all the cooperation received from everyone during this period of transition and the dedication ceremony of our new facilities. A. Monthly Statistical Review: 85% increase over February 1988. B. Activities and Events: 2/16 Attended Library Directors meeting at Satellite Beach Library. 2/22 Phyllis Watson donated $500 w/o any restrictions the Library. It was deposited-in_. the Book Sale Fund to buy a lectern. 2/24 Attended Library Directors meeting at Eau Gallie Library. 3/6 Ellen Marcus, Childrens & Reference Librarian came aboard. She is a graduate of Fla. State Univ at Tallahassee - April 1988. Major in English and minor in French & Communications.. She worked as a volunteer during the past summer at Satellite Beach Library. 3/10 Attended Library Directors meeting at Port St John Library. 3/11 Cape Canaveral Grand Opening and Dedication. C. YEAR OF THE YOUNG READER PROMOTION: Contest for all 3rd Graders in the County will begin during National Library Week (April 9-15) to see which school will have the highest percentage with library cards at the end of the month. The winning school will receive prizes of books donated by FEP, Quality Books and Arthur Vidders. Ms . Marcus wi- ll visit Capeview School. Movies displays and P. R releases for newspapers will be done County=wide. D. FINES & FEES RESOLUTION: was approved on March 7th. We posted a sign alerting our patrons to new $1.00 charge for Videos returned in the book drop. E. CIRCULATION & LOAN RULES & REFERENCE POLICY: were approved by the County Commissioners on March 16th. Page 2 - CC Library Board Minutes 3/21/89 F. THANK YOU NOTES & LETTERS hAVE BEEN SENT AND ARE being sent to all the persons who contributed or participated in. our Grand Opening. (a) Participation in Grand Opening will be honored by putting a book of their._ favorite subject with their name plate onour shelves: Mayor Joy Salomone CC VFW Post 10131 & Ladies Auxiliary Chm. Tim Grady Mrs. Ann Thurm, Historian Comm. Roger Dobson Rep. Dixie Sansom Rep. Charlie Roberts Rev. Mutter Girl and Boy Scouts Cocoa Beach Hi ROTC (b) Mr. & Mrs . Arthur Viano gave a $35.00 donation without reservations . G. STEVE CHAVARRIE from WFTV Channel 9 will donate a video film for our archives . H. FLORIDA TODAY: Spoke with Mr. Vegas., secretary to see what happened that there wasno article about our Grand Opening and to see if we can get pictures for our archives. I. ANNOUNCEMENTS: All to be held in CC Library 4/6 - Childrens Librarian Meeting - Thurs 2 PM 4/13 - Brevard County Library Board Meeting 7: 30 PM 4/14 Library Directors Meeting 9 AM - All day 4/27 - Reference Librarians meeting 9 AM Thurs . Ernestine Butte moved a letter be sent to the Today Editor expressing our concern over lank of publicity and pictures and rege.sting a possible future write up and also the pictures and/or negatives taken at the Dedication ceremony be sent to us for our archives as promised. 2nd, and. carried. Ernestine Butte requested information on the 7-Day no Renewal Books . It was explained the STELLAR SELLERS Books - all containng less that 400 pages were the only ones there was no re- newal policy on and this was a. County Policy. Other 7-ay books may be renewed unless there is a reservation outstand- ing on them. None have more than 400 pages and should be able to be read in 7 days . Chairman Grady suggested a molding be installed for thehanging of pictures on the wall since Ruth Bernstein had offered to allow us to hang some of her worksand there will probably be other artists who would like to do the same. Mr. Nich- ols agreed to look into it.. Ernestine Butte moved Mrs . Bernsteins offer be accepted, providing she be responsible for display so as not tomar walls or any other damages . Pat Stenglein amended the motion to include any other artists who might like to use the Library also, motion seconded and carried as amended... Hilma Goff moved the Librarian prepare a contractural agreement Page 3 - CC Library Board Minutes 3/21/89 absglving the Library of any responsibility pertaining to any displays put into the Library. 2nd and carried. Mr. Nichols presented the board with the figures on the cost to date to the City for the New Library of $497,160.52. He advised he is requesting City Council to install additional lighting,. exterior Trash bins and Ash Tray. The Board thoroughly concurred. Chairman Grady stated he had thfeeapplications on his desk to fill the vacancy on the Library Board and would be inviting them to the next meeting. He further spokeof the need for a secretary and Ernestine Butte volunteered - pro-tem. until the Board is filled. Hilma Goff moved Bert Hines resignation b- accepted - 2nd and carried. Chairman Grady presented the board with a slide presentation of the Library including slides of it underconstruction , completion and of the Dedication Ceremony.
