CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY BOARD
MAY 9, 1989
1. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order at 2:07 p.m. by Chairman Grady.
Board members present were: Chairman Grady; Mrs. Stenglein, Vice
Chairman; Hilma Goff, George Farrell, Gerry Vavrek.
Board members absent: Ernestine Butte
Also present were: Mrs. Escapp4 Library Director; Mr. Nicholas,
C C City manager; Cathy Sweinberg, Library Operations Division manager;
Ann Thurm, C C Historian and Jan Lesser, City Clerk.
In the absence of a secretary, Mrs. Stenglein took notes of the meeting.
11. MINUTES:
The minutes of the April 11th meeting were read and approved. Motion
to accept minutes by Hilma Goff seconded by Tim Grady. Motion passed.
111.DIRECTORS REPORT:
Mrs. Escapa expressed her pleasure at the tremendously increased
community participation in the Cape Canaveral Library.
A. Monthly Statistical Review: April
88% increase over this time last year.
B. Activities and Events:
4/13 Brevard County Library Board Meeting.
4/14 Library Director's Meeting.
4/27 Reference Librarian's Meeting.
All were held at C C Library.
4/21 Ellen Marcus attended the Youth Network Workshop in Volusia.
She will bring new ideas to the C C Library's children 's
programs as a result.
4/24 The Director attended the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 10131
ceremony. She was presented with a certificate of appreciation
for the Library's contribution to youth activities program.
Mayor Joy Salamone was guest speaker.
4/25 Ellen Marcus went to the Capeview Elementary Media Center and
gave a children's program to the third grades. Jeanette Nicholas,
Capeview Elementary media specialist, reported that all the
third graders had taken out library cards.
C. Sumner Program:
All programs will run from June 14th to August 16th.
Story hour (Ages 3-7) will be on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m.
and 11:00 a.m.

Toddler's (Ages 18-24 mos) will be Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.
They must be accompanied by a parent.
The Great American Parade (Ages8-12) is scheduled for
Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m.
D.Adult Program:
As a result of a survey taken to indicate adult preferences,
the adult programs will be held in the afternoons. Sixty forms
were distributed. Forty were returned with thirty-three in
favor of the p.m. Programs will start May 12th, at 2:00 p.m.
An adult film series is planned for June and July.
E.CLSI CONTRACT: This has been approved and there will be a demonstration
for the staff June 8th. from 12 noon to 9:00 p.m. Also June 9th.
from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. , at the Riverhouse ( Mrs. Stewart's
office) in Cocoa. The Board is cordially invited.
F.BUDGET: Was approved for the fiscal year 89/90 by the Brevard County
Library Board at a meeting at C C Library May 8th.
IN THE COUNTY:Mellbburne. Library is expected to be finished by June.
The Central Brevard Library Reference Center should be
completed in October. Satellite Beach Library addition
is underway. Palm Bay Library to be enlarged. Titusville
Library is to be opened on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
in the near future.
It was noted that two new members have been appointed to
the C C Library Board. They are Gerry Vavrek and George
Farrell.
Mrs. Escapa noted that there is a county wide art contest
in the schools to help design three pieces of art to become
part of the exterior/interior of the new Central Brevard
Library Reference Center.
1V.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
The matter of the molding for hanging art articles was discussed.
Chairman Grady has been looking at prices but nothing has
been decided. Mrs. Stenglein brought up the question of
commercialization. It was decided that no prices would be shown
on exhibited art. Mrs. Sweinberg said that the county reserves
the right to approve articles of art shown in the county
libraries. Mr.Nicholas reported that there is nothing new on
outside lights or benches for the library.
V. NEW BUSINESS: City Historian Ann Thurm reported that she had assembled a
large amount of historical memorabilia from the early days
of the City of CapE Canaveral. She would like to give this
to the library to be placed on the reference section. Jan
Lesser also has material stored at the Town office which
should be in the library. Mrs. Sweinberg suggested that all
notebooks could be on file in the library. Mrs. Escapa
will look for extra room in the reference section to contain
this material also a better place for the scrapbook of Cape
Canaveral.

As the office of Secretary of the Board is currently vacant
Mrs. Stenglein suggested that each member take turns taking
the minutes. This matter was unresolved.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: There will be a meeting of the County Library Board at the
Cocoa Library at 7:30 p.m. on June 8th.
Mrs. Goff brought up the matter of changing the library
meeting time from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on a quarterly
basis to enable the councilmen and the Mayor to attend.
Chairman Grady will consult the by-laws.
The Board will meet during the summer as usual.
