CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY BOARD
SEPTEMBER 12, 1989
1. GALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order at 4:04 by Chairman Grady.
Board members present were: Chairman Grady; Mrs. Stenglein, Secretary;
Ernestine Butte; Hilma Goff; Gerry Vavrek.
Board members absent: George Farrell.
Also present were: Mrs. Escapa, Library Director; Mayor Salamone; City-
Manager, Leo Nicholas and Councilman Mr. Randels. .
11.MINUTES:
Regarding the July Minutes, Mrs. Goff asked about the computer. Was it
better to get a new one than have the other repaired? Computer to be
repaired at present. Motion to accept minutes by Mrs.Butte sec. by Mr.Grady.
111. DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
A. Monthly Statistical Review: Circulation of materials incroased July
106%, August 118%.
B. Activities and Events:
8/4 Library Director's Meeting at Eau Gallie.
8/10 CLSI demonstration at the River House. Brevard County Library Board
Meeting at Cocoa.
8/23 Library Director's Meeting at Cocoa.
C. Children's and Adults Programs:
Toddler's Program is Wednesday at 9:00 ( 18 mos and older ) . Story Hour is
also on Wednesday's at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m respectively.
Adult Program is held on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m.
D. Through the efforts of Mr. Nicholas, The City of Cape Canaveral bought a
Ash and Trash Weatherstone with logo for the library. They also hired a
professional cleaner to remove a rug spot at the entrance. The city is
also planting 25 Oak trees on the library grounds to enhance the landscaping.
We really appreciate the co-operation and contribution of the City of Cape
Canaveral to help us maintain our physical facilities.
E. The lectern arrived from Highsmith for the meeting room. The price is approx.
$717.42. It is going to be paid with money from the Book Sale Fund. It will
be added to the City of Cape Canaveral Furnishing Inventory. A contribution
of $500 from Phyllis Watson will also go to the cost of the lectern. It will
have an engraved plate with her name on it.

F. CIST: Installation of phone lines and multiplexor locations are to be set up
with the help of the Brevard County Facilities and Maintenance Dept. We
will get an additional printer.
G: Melbourne Invitation: The Melbourne Library Grand Opening will be held
September 15th. , at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited.
H. Drug Awareness Week - Red ribbons: This will be the week of Oct. 22-29. We
will have a book display and a bulletin board display. Red ribbons will be on
the doors and worn by the staff. The Brevard County Library System bibliography
was prepared by Susan Scymula from Cocoa, with the help of the other reference
librarians.
I. Posters: A beautiful poster was donated to the Children's room by Sophia and
Karen Hayes. Sophia Hayes is a regular patron. She and her sister designed the
poster urging parents to read to their children. •
J. Constitution Week: Mayor Joy Salamoneproclaimed the week of Sept. 17 through
23, 1989, as Constitution Week. She urges all our citizens to pay special
attention to our Constitution and the advantages of American citizenship.
K. Display case: Philip Terry Chapter D.A.R of Cocoa, arranged our display case
to celebrate Constitution Week and gave us bookmarks to hand out to our patrons.
IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Chairman Grady reported that, with Mrs. Stewart's help, the question of where
to put Mrs. Thurm s Historical Collection, has been resolved. There will be
a designated area for the collection.
Mr. Nicholas reported that he is still trying to resolve the outdoor lighting.
He is having trouble getting the necessary catalogues. Has some from HughesCo.
He will also see that the new plantings are watered.
V. NEW BUSINESS:
Mr. Randels brought up the possibility of a Drug Awareness Week Discussion
with a cable T.V. outlet. A T.V. outlet is not available at present. Mr.Randels
will get information on this matter.
VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS:
There will be a meeting of the Brevard County Library Board at the Cocoa
Public Library at 7;30 p.m. on September 14th.
The next meeting of the Cape Canaveral Library Board will be at 2;00 p.m.
on october .10th. _
