HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 11-14-1989 MINUTES CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY BOARD NOVEMBER 14, 1989 1. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 2:11 p.m by Chairman Grady. Board members present were: Chairman Grady, Pat Stenglein, Ernestine Butte, Hilma Goff and Gerry Vavrek. Board members absent: George Farrell. Also present were: Mrs. Escapa, Library Director; Leo Nicholas, City Manager. 11. MINUTES: The minutes were approved as written. 111.DIRECTOR'S REPORT: A. Monthly Statistical Review: Circulation of materials up 92% over this time last year. B. Activities and Events: 10/20 The Cape Canaveral City Volunteer Dinner was celebrated. It was a beautiful and well organized event. Volunteers were presented with attractive couuemorative pins. 11/1 Attended the Library Director's Meeting at Merritt Island. 11/9 Attended Brevard County Library Board Meeting at Cocoa. C. Carpet Incident: On October 23, 1989, a Brevard Achievement Center client spilled a concentrated caustic cleaner on the carpet by the inside lobby doors. They indicated that their insurance would pay for damages. Jane Hasburgh from Traveler's Insurance inspected the area. J & B Commercial Floors conferred with City Manager Nicholas and it was agreed to remove the damaged carpet and install carpet of a similar color.Small burns on the carpet will also be taken care of at this time. Brevard Achievement Center will terminate their cleaning services to our library Dec. 29, 1989. D. CLSI training is going to begin Dec. 11th. Core trainers have been assigned to come to our library to train the staff. Gaylord cut-off date is Dec. 21st. Dec. 22, all will go on-line. Each library will be Activated Ohr( d efferent date. At present these dates are uncertain. More information will be available at the December meeting. E. Computer donated from EGG; William M. WhiLwan, an electrical engineer, C C LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES NOV./p.2 tested our computer with compatible IBM software, but to no avail. A decision will have to be made as to what to do with it. F. Children's Book Week; The CC Public Library is participating by distributing "Raise-A-Reader" Kits at CC Hospital to children born on November 15th, the Year of the Young Reader Day. Ellen Marcus, Children's/Reference Librarian, accompanied by Cindy Kendall, Hospital Community Affairs Director, will deliver the kits at 2: p.m. Kits will contain tee shirts, books and a teddy bear. They were provided by a State Library grant. A letter to this effect was sent to the Florida Today, The Tribune and Modern Age Publications. G. Cocoa Beach Library will be closed for at least five weeks for repairs. This has resulted in an increase in our circulation. November 10th. there were 1067 transactions at the CC Library. Attendance was 374.^.Cocoa Beach will have a temporary office in the old Braille Library building next to Cocoa Beach City Hall. Library patrons will be able to return books to this location. H. Christmas Party: The Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW will hold a children's party at the library on Dec. 16th. , fruit 12:00 to 2:00. A 7 ft. Scotch Pine was purchased from the Merritt Island Rotary Club. I. The Library will be closed Nov. 23 through 26. Dec. 24 through 25 Dec. 31 through Jan. 1, 1990 Jan. 15 Martin Luther King Day J. The Third Annual Report of the City of Cape Canaveral Trust Fund was presented to the Board. Motion by Ernestine Butte seconed by Tim Grady to accept the report. Motion passed. 111. NEW BUSINESS: Election of Officers: Chairman: Tim Grady Nominations Vice-Chairperson: Ernestine Butte Secretary: Pat Stenglein Nominations were accepted as presented . Approved unanimously. At this time Chairman Grady rose to present Certificates of Appreciation to two members of the Board. Ernestine Butte and Hilma Goff have given service far beyond the call of duty to the Cape Canaveral Library. As founding members of the Library, they have worked devotedly toward the realization of a dream which has culminated in the beautiful and elegant library which now graces our city. Congratulations Ernestine and Hilma! Certificates of Appreciation will also be sent to the family of former Board member Gene Stanbrough and Elaine Sheridan, also a former Board member. IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS: There will be a meeting of the Brevard County Library Board at Cocoa Public Library Jan. 11th, 1990 at 7:30 p.m. The next meeting of the Cape Canaveral Library Board will be Bee. 12th at 4p.m. Meeting adjourned at 3:10 p.m. Patricia Stenglein, Secretary Tim Grady, Chairman
