First, there is no lack of vehicle fueling facilities in Cape Canaveral. There are 56 fueling points at 8 service stations in the City. There used to be more. However, the Amoco station at AIA and North Atlantic Avenue gave up selling fuel. The existing points are: 1. Circle K 8797 North Atlantic (Oak Lane). 4 fueling points 2. 7/11 8400 North Atlantic (Canaveral Boulevard). 4 fueling points. 3. 7/11 6770 North Atlantic (Grant Avenue) 4 fueling points. 4. Shell 7200 North Atlantic. (Fillmore Avenue). 8 fueling points. 5. Circle K 7700 North Atlantic. (Jackson Avenue). 4 fueling points. 6. Mobil 8101 Astronaut Blvd. (Columbia Drive) 4 fueling points. 7. Chevron 8090 Astronaut Blvd. (Long Point Drive). 4 fueling points. 8. Racetrac 8899 Astronaut Blve. (Not on a corner). 24 fueling points. The 2010 Census gives the City population ---men, women and children ---as 9,912. There is one fueling point for every 177 residents. No one lives more than half a mile from a fueling point. Drive down AIA at any time of the day or night. You will never ever see all these fueling points in service. What you will see is service stations with no vehicles fueling at all. L it I I1 L r i 1 r Second, the area south of Cape Shores and west of AIA is not the same as other parts of Cape Canaveral. Nancy and I lived for 18 years on Holman Road. Our son, his spouse and our two small grandsons live in our former home. Before becoming Floridians, we lived for 6 years in the Panama Canal Zone in an area surrounded by a rain forest. For the past 3 years we have lived on Smith Road, the first road north of the Barge Canal on Merritt Island. The area is zoned agricultural and the minimum lot size is 2.5 acres. There are large tracts of jungle all around. We can testify that we saw more wildlife in any given month at our Holman Road home than we saw in any given year in Panama or Merritt Island. As you can see from the collection of photos taken over the years we lived on Holman Road, they are not the work of a skilled photographer. But, the photos provide a glimpse, just a small glimpse, of the diversity of wildlife there. Regrettably, we never took photos of the wood storks, woodpeckers, migrating robins, great horned owls, swamp rabbits and other species. We were so enchanted by the Holman Road habitat, that removed our concrete driveway to plant trees and shrubs to increase the critter friendly living space by about 1600 square feet. We hope that our grandsons can one day spend an hour in the backyard watching a Great Horned Owl teach her fledglings how to fly as we once did. Please do not regard the trees and plants on the property in question as simply a few trees and some weeds. They are part of an important ecosystem unlike any other in the City.
