I A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE CITIES OF COCOA
BEACH AND CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA,
ENCOURAGING THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO LOCATE
4 A RESIDENTIAL "MAGNET" SCHOOL FOR MATH AND
SCIENCE STUDENTS IN THE CITY OF COCOA
BEACH.
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has initiated planning to locate a
"magnet" school in Brevard County to accommodate approximately 200
gifted math and science students from communities across the State;
and
WHEREAS, excess capacity currently exists in school facilities
at Cocoa Beach High School that can easily be made available for the
4 kos planned residential students; and
WHEREAS, the Cocoa Beach High School campus also provides
excellent amenities, including sports and recreational facilities
being developed by the City of Cocoa Beach at and adjacent to the
High School ; and
WHEREAS, the Cocoa Beach High School campus also provides ample
space for the construction of dormitory facilities for students with
superior security and safety; and
WHEREAS, strong community support and cooperative relationships
exist between Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral and the District School
Board; and
WHEREAS, future scientists and mathematicians would benefit from
the frequent visitations by prominent state, national and world
figures attending space related activities while being housed in
Cocoa Beach; and
WHEREAS, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral offer a rich tradition
of Space Coast activities including 27 consecutive years of hosting,
in Cocoa Beach, the annual Space Congress for the presentation of
scientific and technical papers :
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Commission of the
City of Cocoa Beach and the City Council of Cape Canaveral , Florida,
jointly urge all appropriate State and Local officials to take
advantage of these natural attributes, available space and existing
capacity by taking the necessary actions to locate the proposed
school at the Cocoa Beach High School campus.
Upon Motion by Commissioner Whippo of Cocoa Beach
and by Councilperson Ann Thurm of Cape Canaveral, Seconded by
Commissioner Thames of Cocoa Beach and
Councilperson John Porter of Cape Canaveral this Resolution was duly
adopted at Meetings of the City Commission of the City of Cocoa
Beach, and City Council of Cape Canaveral, Florida, held during the
first week in June, 1990 .
