HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-16-1971 Regular Meetingi � a MICROFILMED 4 -24 -80 REGULAR MEETING CITY COUNCIL March 16, 1971 A Regular meeting of the City Council of Cape Canaveral was, held on March 16, 1971 at the City Hall, 105 Polk Avenue, Cape Canaveral, Florida at 7:40 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Leo Nicholas. The,roll was called by the City Clerk. Officials present were Mayor Nicholas; Councilmen George Firkins, E. H. Rhame, G. J. Salvaggio and Richard R. Thurm; City Manager A. J. Francis; Assistant City Attorney Richard Scott; City Clerk Anita Ostrom and Sgt. at Arms Officer Klein. The minutes of the regular meeting of March 2, 1971 were read by the Clerk and approved as read. submitted. The Treasury Report for February 1971 was approved as OLD BUSINESS: Item 1. Ordinance no. 4 -71 - Amending Ordinance 81 -64 (2nd reading) Mayor Nicholas read the ordinance entitled "AN ORDINANCE . AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 81 -64 BY DELETING CERTAIN USES PERMITTED IN C -1 AND C -2 DISTRICTS: PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE." By motion of Mr. Salvaggio, seconded,by Mr. Firkins and a unanimous vote of Council, the ordinance was adopted. There were no other agenda items and Mayor Nicholas asked for discussion. Many area residents were in attendance in strong opposition to the Adult businesses recently opened in the City. Among those present were Mr. & Mrs. Larry Albert, Mr. Donald Davis, Dr. Paul Jahn, Mr. Paul Knittel, Mr. Dean Scheiderer, Mrs. Mary Hamilton, Mr. & Mrs. Scalzo and Mr. Bancroft, of the Freedom Center. All were heard by Council and were assured that the City was doing everything possible - within the law and that Attorneys in the area were in the process of drafting an ordinance which would be upheld in the Courts. Those in attendance signed a petition asking that all pornographic type businesses be closet by any means possible. A copy of said petition is attached and made a part of these minutes, by motion of Mr. Salvaggio, seconded by Mr. Rhame and unanimous vote of Council. PAGE I OF Z I k Mayor Nicholas read'a letter from the Department of Housing and Urban Development stating that citizens in Cape Canaveral could now buy Flood Insurance through their local agent. Also the Mayor read a letter-from the Brevard Safety Council regarding Poison Prevention Week, March 21 - March 27, 1971. The City Clerk was instructed to draft a proclamation for the Mayor's signature. Mr. Hubert Feilteau was presented a letter of appreciation and a check for $25.00, having completed five consecutive years with the City.
