RESOLUTION NO. 97-20
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL,
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA SUPPORTING EFFORTS
TO PERSUADE PRESIDENT CLINTON TO DESIGNATE
THE ST. JOHNS RIVER AS AN AMERICAN HERITAGE
RIVER; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the 310 -mile long St. Johns River is the state's longest river and
creates a drainage basin that serves fully a fifth of the land area of Florida; and
WHEREAS, the St. Johns River is an economic backbone of communities all
along is course; and
WHEREAS, the St. Johns River holds a rich and diverse history as it served
Florida's native residents, Florida's settlers and the state's earliest tourists as a
transportation route; settlements of Florida as the river provided a cargo lifeline, an
almost limitless supply of water, rich flood plan soil for farming and habitat for fish and
wild game that served as a food source for Florida's pioneers; and
WHEREAS, the very nature of the St. Johns River helps shape a culture unique
to Florida; and
WHEREAS, the diverse nature of the river - from its marsh headwaters west of
Vero Beach to its mighty expanse where it meets the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville -
provides great recreational opportunities for Floridians and millions of visitors each year;
and
WHEREAS, the St. Johns River and its preservation is key to the quality of life
throughout northeast and central Florida;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE RESOVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL, BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
SECTION 1. The City Council does hereby support the effort to designate the
St. Johns River as an American Heritage River.
SECTION 2. The City Council encourages all neighbors throughout the St.
Johns River Basin to also recognize the benefits they reap from this unique and beautiful
waterway.
SECTION 3. A copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to the St. Johns River
Water Management District.
SECTION 4. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon its
adoption.
DONE AND RESOLVED at a regular meeting of the City Co cil on the 5th
day of August , 1997.
