HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 1995-18• • RESOLUTION NO. 95-18 A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL, AND THE CITY COMNIISSION OF THE CITY OF COCOA BEACH, BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, URGING THE BREVARD COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TO DELAY ANY CONSIDERATION OF CLOSING COCOA BEACH HIGH SCHOOL FOR A PERIOD OF AT LEAST ONE YEAR. WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral and the City Commission of the City of Cocoa Beach agree that Cocoa Beach High School is a valuable asset to the present and future development of the two communities; and WHEREAS, the Council and Commission do not believe that adequate cost estimates for the renovations of the Cocoa Beach High School have been made; and WHEREAS, the Council and Commission have never received a clear definition of the priorities of such recommended renovations or, further, a definition of what was required for life safety in Cocoa Beach High School as compared to other types of needs; and WHEREAS, the School District demographic figures suggest that Cocoa Beach High School can absorb several hundred more students. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT JOINTLY RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral and The City Commission of the City of Cocoa Beach that: 1. The Brevard County School Board delay any consideration of closing Cocoa Beach High School for a period of at least one year and take all steps necessary to immediately assure that this is realized. 2. During the course of that year, the School District and the communities of Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach will meet as a team with other relevant parties to try to set clear priorities and alternatives that avoid the closure of the high school while taking into account the financial constraints of the Brevard County School Board. 3. The renovation priorities and alternatives report referenced in Item (2) above will be provided to the Brevard County School Board, the City Council and the City Commission no later than January 31, 1996. 4. The Council and Commission will be contacted by the Brevard County School Board, in writing, at least thirty (30) days prior to any public discussion or action concerning the use, disposition or delivery of educational services to Cocoa Beach High School. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. ADOPTED BY the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral, Florida, this 16th day of May, 1995. ATTEST: .
