HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 1995-10r • RESOLUTION NO. 95 -10 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL, BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA; EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE CONTINIIANCE OF SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAM IN BREVARD COUNTY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, in 1994 in Brevard County, 583 economically disadvantaged youth participated in the Summer Youth Employment and Training Program, being placed in public institutions or nonprofit agencies to gain work experience, or were enrolled in "Business Adventure," an academic enrichment program designed to enhance basic skills, life skills and citizenship; and WHEREAS, for the summer of 1995, $1.2 million was appropriated to serve 600 youth in the Brevard Youth Works! Summer Program for youth ages 14 -17 who would participate in a wide variety of activities, including academic enhancement, employability skill training, career exploration, and community service projects, while earning up to $150 per week; and WHEREAS, youth ages 18 -21 would learn employability skills and then be placed at a worksite for seven weeks and earn a salary for their efforts while becoming valuable working citizens in Brevard County; and WHEREAS, the economic impact of the Summer Youth Program on Brevard County is substantial, due to the youth using their paychecks to save money for college, purchase school clothes and even provide basic necessities for their families;. and WHEREAS, the 1982 bipartisan Job Training Partnership (JTPA) was designed to help economically disadvantaged and dislocated citizens in each community tap job skill training, job placement • • City of Cape Canaveral, Florida Resolution No. 95 -10 Page 2 assistance and workforce maturity skills to aid them in becoming valuable tax paying citizens again; and WHEREAS, a U.S. Congressional budget elimination of the programs will result in $1.2 million loss to Brevard County economy with the proposed reductions to the year round youth program, the total economic impact to Brevard is $2.4 million; and WHEREAS, Brevard youth will suffer without the job training experience and skills training to prepare them for the future workforce and it is the desire of the City of Cape Canaveral to officially recognize and support the protection of this important investment in Brevard County's future. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral, Brevard County, Florida, as follows: SECTION 1. That the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral does hereby unanimously express its full support of funds being restored to the Summer Youth Employment and Training Program, a critical domestic involvement in creating a future highly skilled workforce who can compete for rewarding jobs. SECTION 2. That the City Clerk is instructed to send copies of this resolution to U.S. Senators Bob Graham and Connie Mack and U.S. Representative Dave Weldon. SECTION 3.
