HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 1994-05• • RESOLUTION NO. 94 -05 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL, BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA; URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO ENACT LEGISLATION THAT WOULD GRANT IMMUNITY FROM PERSONAL CIVIL LIABILITY, UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES, TO VOLUNTEERS WORKING ON BEHALF OF NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, thousands of dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to improve conditions throughout our country; and WHEREAS, many nonprofit organizations are experiencing declining numbers of individuals willing to join their volunteer ranks; and WHEREAS, legislation is vital to the efforts of hundreds of volunteer organizations that face the growing challenge of enlisting hard working unpaid volunteers despite their concerns over personal liability; and WHEREAS, the Volunteer Protection Act, H.R. 911, encourages states to make individual volunteers immune from personal civil liability, except in extraordinary circumstances. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral, Florida, as follows: SECTION 1. That the State of Florida Legislature is encouraged to enact legislation that would grant immunity from personal civil liability, under certain circumstances, to volunteers working on behalf of nonprofit organizations and governmental entities. SECTION 2. That the City Clerk is instructed to send copies of this resolution to the President and members of the Space Coast City of Cape Canaveral, Florida Resolution No. 94 -05 Page 2 League of Cities, State of Florida Legislative Delegation and Congressman Jim Bacchus. SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. ADOPTED BY the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral, Florida, this 1st day of March , 1994. Salamone, MAYOR
