Call to Order The regular meeting of the Cape Canaveral Library Board was held Tuesday, November 14, 2006, and called to order at 2 :00 PM by the Library Board Chairman, Tim Grady. The following Members were present: ❑ Dr. Tim. Grady, Chairman ❑ Jim Brown, Library Board Vice Chairman ❑ Joanna Atwood, Secretary ❑ June Bell, Library Board Member ❑ Jean Deck, Library Board Member ❑ Mary Ernst, Library board Member ❑ Harry Pearson, Library Board Member ❑ Isabel Matos- Escapa, Library Director ❑ Marianne Ellis, Recording Secretary A. Approval of colonies Joanna Atwood made a motion to approve the March 10, 2006 minutes. June Bell seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously as approved and accepted. B. Correspondence There was no Correspondence to report. C. Chairperson's Report None D. Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public Library Report Friends had their Annual Meeting. Ten members attended. They announced their Book Sale the first week of December. They donated two CD/DVD racks. The approximate cost was $2,500. • • E. Director's Report All members present received a Monthly Report ofLibrary Activities, a copy of November and December 2006 Cape Canaveral Public Library Activity Calendars. Activities & Events: Attended Library Directors' Meetings, Brevard County Library Board Meetings, and Trainings. Staff has also attended trainings and workshops. Staffing: At this time, we have full staff members, except the Custodial Worker. The Custodial Worker position will be re- advertised for two more weeks. Staff Training: Brevard County Libraries were closed on Monday, October 9, for an in -house all day trai ning and Star Awards Program at the Brevard County School Board Meeting Room The Friends of the Cape Canaveral paid the staff members' lunches and the Library Directors' paid for the Breakfast Goodies. Cody Study: The Commissioners approved pay raises for approximately 50% of the County Employees as a result Of the Cody Salary Study. Library Assistant I's in the Youth Services Departments were reclassified to Librarians I's and salaries adjusted accordingly_ Only half of the amount of the proposed increases was given in March and the other half -in October. Library employees were found to be the most underpaid in the County according to the study. Storytime, Adult Programs: We continue our storytime and our adult programs. Computers & Equipment The Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public Library bought two (2) DVD's display cases. We purchased a Color Printer, Scanner, and Fax for the Director's office. Computer System: Four vendors were selected by the RFP Committee. The RFP committee was composed of representatives from Circulation, Technical Processing, Reference, Youth Services, Directors, and Computer staff members. ILS was selected. Contract Negotiations are being done with the County Attorney. It will be around March 2007 that we expect to have it running. Construction Update: The Brevard County Board of Commissioners approved the construction of three new libraries: Mims, Port Malabar, Rockledge, and the expansion of the Suntree Library. The first one to be constructed will be the one in Mims. It took effect on August 8. A tamper proof sticker is placed on young people's library cards, plus a notation in the computer stating they have permission from their parents to use the Internet. One of the biggest concerns will be social networking sites. Blocking a site does not help because young people will go to other sites. Sheriff Jack Parker will work with the libraries to have classes for the parents. Anniversary: We celebrated the Cape Canaveral Public Library 40th Anniversary on May 10, 2006 It was a great success. Brevard County Libraries Family Reading Festival: Brevard County Libraries Family Reading Festival will be on Saturday, March 17, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Cocoa Village Riverfront Park. The Brevard Library Foundation sponsors this free community wide event. It was a great success last year. It includes a Friday Evening reception on March 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cocoa Civic Center to honor the invited authors to the event. The day -long festivities during Saturday's program consists of information booths featuring area companies and services organizations, reading by various authors, music, a free Internet cafe, genealogy information, kids' crafts, food vendors and wine tasting. In addition, free books will be distributed to the children Telephone Lines: We have an additional telephone line, which number is (321) 868 -1137, at the Cape Canaveral Public Library. We also have a new fax line at the Secretary's Desk, which number is (321) 868- 1138, and it will be the Director's fax. The fax, (321) 868 -1103 that we had in the working area, was moved to the Reference office (Reference Fax) to facilitate the work of the reference librarians when they are sending the patrons' resumes. Roof Replacement — Expansion Area Only: Dave Mc Murrin, North Area. Region Director, and I, met with Kirk Schults, Tech Systems Inc_, Contractor, Jerry, his supervisor, and Facilities Representative, Bob Anderson, on October 17. They started working on Thursday, November 2. The roof replacement will take about two weeks weather permitting. The cost of the Replacement was $65,000. It will have a years' labor warranty and 15 years' warranty for the manufacturers` materials. Catherine T. Schwweinsberg, Library Services approved it. Project was completed on Thursday, November 9, 2006. The Big Read Grant: Brevard County Libraries have been awarded a $20,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor a Countywide Reading Event based upon To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee. Activities; such as book discussions, video orDVD`s presentations, will be scheduled throughout the month of February 2007 at different libraries.
