HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 1974-24Xt RESOLUTION No, 74.24 A RESOLUTION OPPOSING SENATE BILL S. 1361 WHICH PROVIDES THAT CABLE TELEVISION COMPANIES TI IROUGHOUT FLORIDA AND THE UNITED STATES WOULD BE PROIJIBITED FROM CARRYING ANY SPORTS PROGRAM- MING UNLESS SUCII SPORTS PROGRAMMING WAS CARRIED BY LOCAL. TELEVISION STATIONS, WHEREAS, the United States Senate Subcommittee on Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights reported Senate Bill S. 1361 out of the sub- committee unanimously with the provision that each member reserve the right to amend the bill in full committee, and said bill as written excludes television cable carriage of any sports broadcasts that is not carried on a local station; and WHEREAS, in the City of Cape Canaveral. Florida this provision would affect Its citizens who receive their TV by way of cable prohibiting them such sporting events as the World Series, the Super Bowl. N13A Play- offs, the Olympics, NCAA Footlxnll, etc,; and WHEREAS, the copyright fee schedule as proposed could cause an Increase hi CATV service rates; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED 13Y TiIE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1, That the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral. Florida, urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to eliminate from S. 1361 the sports blackout provision which would exclude cable carriage of any professional sports broadcast that is not carried on a local station so that the citizens of Ibis community and citizens of other like communities would be permitted through cable service to view all programs receivable. SECTION 2. It is further urged that the CATV copyright provision should be completely and entirely eliminated, so that no Increase of cable tv rates be Imposed upon the City of Cape Canaveral. Florida. SECTION 3, That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to all persons in authority for their consideration and /or action. SECTION 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption by the City of Cape Canaveral, Florida. ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Cape Canaveral.
