Raymond
MEMBERS ABSENT: Chris Hale, Stephanie Robinson
OTHERS PRESENT:

Chairman Gene Petre called the meeting to order at 5:30.
1. The board listened to a Dog Park Presentation by Dave Schirtzinger.
2. John Dattilio moved and Carol Delano seconded the motion to approve the
minutes from July 27, 2010. Motion was unanimously approved by all Members
present.
3. Director Robert Lefever presented his report for August and September 2010.
There were no questions from the Board. Gene Petre said Robert Lefever and his
staff were doing a great job. He also mentioned that he has observed people
drinking alcohol and loose dogs at Manatee Park and thought the BSCO could
monitor the groups renting the park. He also asked if anyone from the board
would like to spearhead participating as a board or otherwise want to enter the
annual Chili Cook Off.
4. Cheri Down Park discussion: was continued from the last recreation board
meeting in July. There were a lot of concerns regarding the cost to the city
especially in this economy. Robert Lefever said the city was addressing all issues
and that this was staying in line with the Visioning. David Greene replied that
there would be no out of pocket to the City and that the City Council was looking
into this.
5. Dog Park discussion: Gene Petre suggested a starting point should be at the
Radisson Resort because Manatee Park is a passive park. Robert Lefever said the
use of Manatee Park is determined by the State grant. If we make an investment
(water and fencing) and if Bob Baugher wants to develop his land we will be back
to looking for a dog park. Dave Schirtzinger said there are 150 people who are
friends of the Dog Park some for 10 years who are willing to contribute money
and are asking the city for a usable piece of land. There are people who relocate
because of animal friendly cities.
Gene Petre made a motion to approve the Dog Park concept at a location other
than Manatee Park at no cost to the city residents. John Dattilo seconded the
motion. Motion was defeated 3-2 (Carol Delano —no, Doug Raymond — no,
Steve Jarvis — no.)
6. Robert Lefever outlined the future plans and goals for the Recreation Department
including building a new multi -purpose community center, changes at the current
recreation complex, youth center, Manatee Park, Banana River Park and Cherie
Down Park.
With no further business Doug Raymond made the motion to adjourn and Steve Jarvis
seconded it. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15PM.
Next Recreation Board meeting will be Tuesday, January 25th.
