RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
CITY HALL ANNEX, 111 POLK AVENUE
MONDAY, November 17, 2008

Vice -Chairperson, Gene Petre called the meeting to order at 5:30.
The board unanimously approved to adopt the minutes of the Regular Meeting on
September 29, 2008.
Director Robert Lefever reviewed the Recreation Department Reports for September and
October including updates on the playground renovation, new programs at the Recreation
Center and upcoming events.
DISCUSSION:
The 4 Levels of Life Trail Sponsor Panels were discussed.
• Level 1 - $50.00 Community Appreciation Panel. Name plate up to 3 lines. Life
Time Sponsor
• Level 2 - $1,500.00 1 Year Sponsor Panel
• Level 3 - $2,500.00 3 Year Sponsor Panel
• Level 4 — 5,000.00 Life Time Sponsor
Gene Petre made a motion to add a 2 year $2,000.00 panel. The motion was passed
unanimously among Members present.
Playground Naming Essay Contest.
Director Robert Lefever read the names and essays of the five finalists. All students from
1 s1 to 6th grades from Cape View Elementary School.
• Sandpiper Park
• Kids World Park
• Spider Web Park
• Magnolia Park
• Presidents Park
•
Sandpiper Park won by a land slide. Spider Web Park came in second followed by Kids
World.
Carol Delano said all five students should receive certificates along with the Savings
Bond for First place. Everyone agreed.
Gene Petre stated that the Code of Ordinances refers to the Recreation Board as having 7
Members with no alternates and said it should be clarified that it is actually 5 Members
and 2 alternates.
Joyce Hamilton stated she would have a final total from the Golf for Kids Kiwanis Club
Fund Raiser in two weeks. They were still waiting to receive additional money from the
ticket sales and deduct their expenses.
Shannon Roberts asked how the Movies in the Park and Jazz Under the Stars ideas were
coming along. Robert responded that we were looking at possibly having the Movies in
the Park in March. The Jazz Under the Stars is still in the planning stage. Shannon also
said some of the citizens indicated they thought Banana River Park was underutilized.
Robert explained that Our Saviors Soccer Team and the Brevard Soccer Organization
were using the field. He also said parking is a huge problem and the playground being
across the field is a problem and the fact that there are no restrooms doesn't help. He is
looking into ways to improve the situation. Shannon said she has talked to residents who
would like to have a kayak access to the river. Robert replied he is currently working on
three projects that will help.
Gene Petre asked why there wasn't a playground area for kids at Manatee Sanctuary
Park. Robert said he didn't know the reason and would look into it.
With no further discussions or new business Gene Petre moved and seconded by Carol
Delano that the meeting be adjourned. The motion passed unanimously by members
present. GenePetre announced the next Recreation Advisory Board meeting is scheduled
for January 26, 2009.
