Chairperson John Dattilo called the meeting to order at 5:30.
The board unanimously approved to adopt the minutes of the Regular Meetings on
March 31, 2008 and April 28, 2008.
Director Robert Lefever reviewed the Recreation Department Budget and his monthly
report. The Canaveral City Park is 95% complete and will be adding 12 new trees. The
concrete pad at Manatee Sanctuary Park that was damaged by Nick's Lawn Service was
repaired by Nick's at their expense. The Football Scrimmage held at Canaveral City Park
was very well attended and by adding a Fall Baseball event it might get the kids excited
about joining sports. Gene Petre said if we had a home run hitting contest he would join
in the 70's age group.
Robert suggested the Recreation Board meet every other month or quarterly.
Gene Petre made the motion to meet every other month. Hank Dinenno seconded the
motion and the board unanimously approved.
DISCUSSION:
Gene Petre asked why we don't charge for our Summer Camp program. He thought
maybe a nominal fee to recoup our expenses. Robert Lefever answered this was a pilot
program, we may charge next year. Eileen Kandret suggested the kids who participated in
the Bright Future Program at Cocoa Beach Jr. /Sr. High School need to volunteer their
time to earn credits. It would be a good idea to recruit some of them for next years
summer program.
Gene Petre asked what ideas had been brought up by the "Surf's Up" Recreation
Departments dance committee to improve the numbers of participants. Robert replied that
the committee decided it would be better to hold the dance at the Youth Center instead of
the Recreation complex assembly room and to lower the ages from 15 - 17 year olds to
0 0
12 -15 year olds. This would target the middle school age kids who are more likely to
attend. Robert said it was a good learning experience for the staff planners.
There was discussion regarding the City's 45th Anniversary. It was suggested that the
Fall Festival at Manatee Sanctuary Park which is scheduled for Saturday, October 11`"
would be a good time to celebrate the anniversary. Shannon Roberts responded that we
could give out coins with the city logo on them like the ones that were given out at the
Wednesday Friendsday Chamber of Commerce Event. Robert Lefever suggested free
comrnetnorative Frisbees and banners. This was unanimously approved by all.
Carol Delano expressed an interest in adding a kayak access ramp at Manatee Sanctuary
Park. Gene Petre suggested we hold kayaking classes. Hank Dinetuio said there needs to
be some control because Cocoa Beach has big commercial trucks parked at their ramp all
the time.
Gene Petre moved and seconded by Eileen Kandret that the meeting be adjourned. The
motion passed unanimously by members present. Chairman John Dattilo announced the
next Recreation Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for September 29, 2008 and the
meeting was adjourned at 6:38.
