DISCUSSION
Robert discussed options for 10% budget cuts. Possibly closing the recreation department
building during the weekends and leaving the courts open to the public at no charge. This
would not cut services but would cut costs to operate. Joyce suggested people could sign
up for courts during the week. Shannon suggested leaving just one free day on the
weekends and looking into revenue generating activities. Robert also stated there were
lots of other possibilities.
Robert explained the two different options for the Life Trail Sponsorships which included
three levels for Option land four levels for Option 2. Joyce indicated local hotels might
be interested in sponsorships and maybe smaller spots for individuals and families. Carol
suggested using the panels for nature organizations and keep it natural. Shannon agreed
that the sponsorship should be used for nature educational tips and nature spots.
Robert responded that we need to generate some kind of revenue to off set the cost but
we need to do it in a tasteful, respectful way to preserve what we already have. He will
0
look at all the options we already have and the ones discussed at this meeting and maybe
come up with a 3rd option. He will report back at the next recreation board meeting.
Robert informed the board that there are summer activities planned for the kids and they
will be free. The kids can go to the Recreation Complex and play racquetball and tennis
with the equipment provided for free during the week. The Youth Center hours will be
extended to 10am — 7pm and the summer rewards program will again be offered to the
kids. The recreation department staff is in the process of collecting prizes for the
program. For the younger kids ages 5 — 9 the recreation center will have a summer camp
from 9am-12noon Tuesday thru Friday. The planned activities will include arts & crafts,
games, & sports. Also the free tennis lessons will continue to be offered on Tuesdays at
loam.
Robert announced that a Kids Community Awareness Day is scheduled for Saturday,
August 2nd. It will also be free of charge. This will be a good opportunity for kids and
parents to get ready for back to school. Among the services available are screenings for
vision and scoliosis, bike registration, contests, nutrition information, water safety and
free school supplies. The Kiwanis Club will be giving away free hot dogs.
OPEN:
It was also mentioned that it would be a good idea to start up a community newsletter
with a schedule of upcoming events and activities that would be mailed to the Cape
Canaveral residents and businesses.
The next Recreation Board meeting will be held Monday, June 30th at 5:30pm.
