HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 03-31-08• Recreation Advisory Board City of Cape Canaveral, Florida March 31, 2008 Members Present: John Dattilo,Gene Petre, Carol Delano, Hank Dinenno, Members Absent: Eileen Kandret, Chris Hale Others Present: Robert Lefever, Director of Parks & Recreation Shannon Roberts, Cape Canaveral City Council Member Bennett Boucher, City Manager Joyce Hamilton, Kiwanis Club Fran Norman, Board Secretary Chairman John Dattilo called the meeting to order at 5:30pm The board unanimously approved to adopt the minutes of the Regular Meeting on February 25, 2008. Director Robert Lefever reviewed the Recreation Department Budget. Director Robert Lefever presented the February Recreation Department Report. • Athletic Leagues • Canaveral City Park Playground • Fit Trail usage • Programs ,Leagues & New CIasses • Youth Center Activity • Brevard County Traveling Skate Park New Business;The Recreation Center will offer free tennis and racquetball courts including equipment to kids during Spring Break and the Youth Center will be open from loam to 7pm. Discussion: BCSO PAL and Cape Canaveral Parks and Recreation Youth Center joint use combining resources and providing programs suitable for the youth of Cape Canaveral. The main priority would be to increase programming and changing the ages from 10-15 year olds to include 8-17year olds. Hank Dinenno indicated that there are no activities for the older teens which is causing loitering and bad behavior. He has seen the PAL program work in other states. Shannon Roberts also stated that she has talked to parents who are looking for physical structure for their older kids, and would like to see more sheriff visibility. Director Robert Lefever said the Recreation Leaders at the Youth Center were informally surveying the kids that are hanging around to see what they would like implemented. Gene Petre indicated he would like to see the survey extended to the Jr./Sr. High School where the kids could get together and brainstorm their ideas. Joyce Hamilton indicated that the Kiwanis Club would like to help the PAL program by purchasing needed equipment and that the Kiwanis Foundation would be involved in a "match for match". Old Business: Recreation Director Robert Lefever said the Life Trail is complete and heavily used, and that the ground work for the sponsorship program is ready to move forward. A discussion followed regarding the time limit on the 10 station panels. Gene Petre expressed his concern regarding a lifetime commitment and that the cost should be realistic and reasonable. Bennett Boucher responded that he would like to see one, two or three years with different price levels and extend the offer it to a multitude of sponsors especially our local businesses. He also stated that he would like to see advertising in other locations. Joyce Hamilton indicated that she would like to see the Life Trail offer extended to residents. Robert Lefever concluded that he would put together two or three different options by the next meeting. Open Discussion: Gene Petre asked if anyone could share their opinions on the Art Festival on March 29th & 30t. Robert indicated that there were fewer vendors than last year. Bennett said it was the economy but he thought it was successful, a nice steady flow of people both days. It's only the second year and these events take time to grow. Joyce complemented the Senior Lite & Fit Aerobics class, said it was a great class but only one person came. She wanted to know how it was promoted. Robert responded by saying it is posted on our sign along N. Atlantic Ave. and we were having a difficult time getting our programs published in Florida Today as well as the local weeklies. He sends them the information but they don't include it in the papers. Gene said he should talk to the editor. Gene Petre moved and seconded by Carol Delano that the meeting be adjourned. The motion passed unanimously by members present. Chairman John Dattilo announced the next Recreation Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for April 28, 2008 and the meeting was adjourned at 6:35pm.
