Discussion: BCSO PAL and Cape Canaveral Parks and Recreation Youth Center joint
use combining resources and providing programs suitable for the youth of Cape
Canaveral. The main priority would be to increase programming and changing the ages
from 10-15 year olds to include 8-17year olds. Hank Dinenno indicated that there are no
activities for the older teens which is causing loitering and bad behavior. He has seen the
PAL program work in other states. Shannon Roberts also stated that she has talked to
parents who are looking for physical structure for their older kids, and would like to see
more sheriff visibility. Director Robert Lefever said the Recreation Leaders at the Youth
Center were informally surveying the kids that are hanging around to see what they
would like implemented. Gene Petre indicated he would like to see the survey extended
to the Jr./Sr. High School where the kids could get together and brainstorm their ideas.
Joyce Hamilton indicated that the Kiwanis Club would like to help the PAL program by
purchasing needed equipment and that the Kiwanis Foundation would be involved in a
"match for match".
Old Business: Recreation Director Robert Lefever said the Life Trail is complete and
heavily used, and that the ground work for the sponsorship program is ready to move
forward. A discussion followed regarding the time limit on the 10 station panels. Gene
Petre expressed his concern regarding a lifetime commitment and that the cost should be
realistic and reasonable. Bennett Boucher responded that he would like to see one, two or
three years with different price levels and extend the offer it to a multitude of sponsors
especially our local businesses. He also stated that he would like to see advertising in
other locations. Joyce Hamilton indicated that she would like to see the Life Trail offer
extended to residents. Robert Lefever concluded that he would put together two or three
different options by the next meeting.
Open Discussion:
Gene Petre asked if anyone could share their opinions on the Art Festival on March 29th
& 30t. Robert indicated that there were fewer vendors than last year. Bennett said it was
the economy but he thought it was successful, a nice steady flow of people both days. It's
only the second year and these events take time to grow.
Joyce complemented the Senior Lite & Fit Aerobics class, said it was a great class but
only one person came. She wanted to know how it was promoted. Robert responded by
saying it is posted on our sign along N. Atlantic Ave. and we were having a difficult time
getting our programs published in Florida Today as well as the local weeklies. He sends
them the information but they don't include it in the papers. Gene said he should talk to
the editor.
Gene Petre moved and seconded by Carol Delano that the meeting be adjourned. The
motion passed unanimously by members present. Chairman John Dattilo announced the
next Recreation Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for April 28, 2008 and the meeting
was adjourned at 6:35pm.
