HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 03-23-2009• • RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD CITY HALL ANNEX, 111 POLK AVENUE MONDAY, March 23, 2009 MEMBERS PRESENT: Hank Dinenno, Carol Delano, John Dattilo, Gene Pete, Eileen Kandret, Stephanie Robinson OTHERS PRESENT: Robert Lefever, Director of Parks & Recreation Rocky Randels, Mayor Joyce Hamilton, Kiwanis Club Rosalie Wolf Douglas Raymond Thomas Quinn Lisa Whitaker Fran Norman, Board Secretary The meeting was called to order at 5:31 by chairperson, Hank Dinenno 1. The board unanimously approved to adopt the minutes of the Regular Meeting on January 26, 2009. 2. The board interviewed prospective alternate board members, Rosalie Wolf and Douglas Raymond. The board members will send their votes via E-mail to Robert Lefever. 3. Ms. Lisa Whitaker asked the board to consider adding a smaller T-Ball field to the softball field at Canaveral City Park. Gene asked why they couldn't use the field at Cape View Elementary School. Robert said he would look into all available options and keep the cost at a minimum. 4. Director Robert Lefever reviewed the Recreation Department Reports for January and February, including updates on the playground renovation, new programs at the Recreation Center and upcoming events. 5. The Board discussed charging more rental fees for Organizations using Manatee Park. Hank said big events; more than 50 people need to pay more because there is more wear and tear. He said we need a tier, one for small private use, one for 50 plus and one for organizations who charge. Gene asked what other communities charge. Robert said we would look into different fees. Hank suggested we discuss the options at the next meeting. 6. There was a discussion regarding charging Little League Baseball to use the field in Cape Canaveral. Cocoa Beach charges $10.00 per child for lighting and field maintenance. Hank expressed his concern stating that Little League is run by all volunteers and there are no extra monies. Gene responded that we should be getting something back. Mayor Randels indicated that Recreation doesn't run for profit. The • • philosophy is not to charge. Hank suggested a joint fundraiser with Little League rather than charge. He said in Cocoa Beach the Elks Club raise thousands of dollars for Little League. It was agreed by all that further discussion was needed, Hank volunteered to do some in-depth research and that no decision be made now. 7. The Board unanimously agreed there was no need for a discussion on Alternate Board Members rotating with Regular Board Members because they already do, they just can't vote. 8. Robert announced the Park Dedication will be held before the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11 th. REPORTS/NEW BUSINESS; 9. Under old business, Gene asked if we had any sponsors for the Manatee Sanctuary Park Life Trail. Mayor Randels stated that $5000.00 is too expensive even for the Radisson & Marriott Resorts. Robert responded that we need to look at the options again. This will be on the agenda for the next Recreation Board Meeting. Eileen informed the board that she saw in the December Issue of Southern Living, that St. Petersburg had a Shuffleboard Club that played at night and thought it was a good idea. Carol had some concerns that she thought there should be beach end signs in Spanish. Also that sex offenders were living too close to the parks. 10. Joyce announced the Talent Show at Cape View this Thursday at 5:30pm. The next Recreation Board meeting will be held on Monday, May 18th. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 pm.
