HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 08-24-2009RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD CITY HALL ANNEX, 111 POLK AVENUE MONDAY, August 24, 2009 MEMBERS PRESENT: Carol Delano, John Dattilo, Gene Petre Eileen Kandret, Stephanie Robinson, Doug Raymond MEMBERS ABSENT: Hank Dinenno OTHERS PRESENT: Robert Lefever, Director of Parks & Recreation Joyce Hamilton, Kiwanis Club Andrea Binney, Recreation Coordinator Paul Owens, Racquetball Tournament Director Mike D'Amico, Racquetball Tournament Director Fran Norman, Board Secretary The meeting was called to order at 5:30 by vice chairperson, Carol Delano. Paul Owens, Racquetball Tournament Director, asked to be heard before the Board voted to adopt the Minutes from May 18, 2009. He asked if the Board would reconsider the vote on Special Event 50% Split with the City regarding the racquetball tournaments held twice a year, explaining the amount of work both he and Mike D'Amico do before and during the tournaments. He handed out copies of the breakdown of the director's duties before and during the tournaments as well as Recreation Department staffing breakdown. Gene Petre said he would like to see the entry fee for Cape Canaveral residents less than non-residents and Paul Owens agreed. John Dattilo made a motion to stay at the 25/75% split for the tournaments. Eileen Kandret asked if they could possibly be grandfathered in with the past split. John Dattilo's motion failed for lack of a 2nd motion. The Board continued the discussion with questions directed at Paul Owens. Gene Petre made the motion that all City hosted Special Events will enter into at 25% (City) and 75% (Private Group) split for all profits after expenses. John Dattilo seconded the motion. The motion passed 4/1 with the exception of Carol Delano who voted against. Robert Lefever reviewed the May and August Department reports. • Tennis & Racquetball Leagues • Youth Center activity including the addition of the PAL Program • Growth of the PAL Program • Magic Show • Movie in the Park • Traveling Skate Park • Summer Camp • Canoe & Kayak Launch • "Drummin' the Sun Down • Rock & Skate Jam • Kids Community Awareness Day There was a discussion about the addition of a corporate rate for Manatee Sanctuary Park pavilion rentals. There would be a 25/75% split in addition to the rental fee. After a discussion concerning having a dog park in the city, it was unanimously voted by all board members present that the recreation board was not in support of a dog park in the city. Gene Petre made the motion and Stephanie Robinson 2nd The addition of a chili cook off at the Fall Festival was well received. Robert Lefever said we have invited all the city departments as well as the other boards and Cape View. The chili will be cooked off premises and brought to the festival in a crock pot. The recreation department will supply tables and electricity to the participants. The cost will be $2.00 a person to taste the different chilies and vote for their favorite. Recreation board members had final thoughts for the meeting: • Eileen Kandret said if we did have a dog park we could sell memorial bricks. • Gene Petre stated he had a level of concern for the location of a dog park. • Doug Raymond had budget presentation question, which Robert answered. • Stephanie Robinson asked if there were any plans to build a skate park, Robert answered that we had the support of the PAL program and there were two possible sites. The '/2 basketball court at the Youth Center and the Recreation Center between the racquetball and shuffleboard courts. Without further business Gene Petre made the motion to adjourn the meeting and was 2nd by Stephanie Robinson. The next Recreation Board meeting will be held on Monday, October 26t.
