Subject: FW: Specimen Tree Size Question
Hello Abby,
Please see the email thread below. As we discussed yesterday, the City of Cape Canaveral is considering reducing the defined size of its specimen trees from a diameter of 24 inches to
18 inches in an effort to promote better tree conservation since we don’t have all that much left on the island. Given your work and passion for urban forestry, I think this would be
a great project for you to take on. The link to find our City Code’s definition of a specimen tree in down below as well.
We have a meeting to discuss this with the team on Friday, October 11 at 9:00 am. Please consider this meeting time your due date to come with a compilation of research based on what
other cities/counties have done in the state (or outside the state) and be prepared to showcase this work to our director, deputy director, and city arborist. Five to seven examples
should suffice, with three already established below from the City of Fort Lauderdale, the City of Coral Gables, and Miami-Dade County.
Please let me now if you have any questions. Thank you!

Good afternoon Zach,
Thanks for reaching out. I believe ours is 18 inches or greater as well. Please see below. I am copying Deena who is the Director of our Greenspace Management team so she can chime in
and correct me if I am wrong. Deena please see below. Thanks.

Hello Matt and Diego,
Hope all is well in South Florida. Question. What is your city’s defined specimen tree diameter? Ours is currently 24 inches (see the link/screenshot below) and we’re thinking about
downsizing that to 18 inches in the interest of conservation. We saw that the City of Fort Lauderdale has theirs set at 18 inches. Wanted to reach out to see what the City of Coral
Gables does since you are THE tree city. Thank you!
