WHEREAS, for the last 36 years the annual distribution of poppies by American
Legion Challenger Auxiliary Unit 348, has been officially recognized and endorsed by
government leaders, and
WHEREAS, on September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of the
American Legion Family to memorialize the sacrifice of lives in war; and
WHEREAS, in 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of the
American Legion, and
WHEREAS, poppies are assembled by disabled Veterans and the proceeds of this
worthy fund-raising campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of disabled and in-need
Veterans, and the widows and orphans of deceased Veterans, and
WHEREAS, meeting the continuing needs of our Veterans should be the concern
of every American who values his or her freedom; and
WHEREAS, the Challenger 348 Auxiliary Unit promotes the poppy as a symbol of
the sacrifice our military has made, a symbol to open people's hearts and inspire them to
donate, and
WHEREAS, citizens are encouraged to recognize the merits of this cause by
contributing generously to its support and accepting poppies during the days set aside
for the distribution of this symbol to honor every service member who has died in the
name of liberty, freedom, and democracy while also showing their support for living
Veterans, service members and their families.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wes Morrison, Mayor of the City of Cape Canaveral, by virtue
of the authority of said office, do hereby proclaim May 23 to 26, 2025, as:
NA TIO NAL POPPY DAYS
in the City of Cape Canaveral and encourage the citizens and visitors of Cape Canaveral
to wear a poppy as symbol of support and gratitude to the men and women of this
country who have risked their lives in defense of the freedoms which we continue to enjoy
as American citizens.
