These highly reliable devices have been a standard of the industry for over 45 years. Many thousands of these units are now in use controlling the release of extinguishants such as clean agents, 002, water, or dry chemicals. In some systems the device is used as an ALARM device, to sense overheat or fire, and alert personnel. In other systems, it is used as a RELEASE device, to sense fire and actuate fire attack systems. DETECT -A -FIRE units have met with wide acceptance because they are designed with RATE COMPENSATION. This provides a unique advantage over both fixed tem- perature and rate -of -rise types of detectors because only the DETECT A -FIRE unit accurately senses the surrounding air temperature regardless of the fire growth rate. At precisely the predetermined danger point, the system is activated. Fixed temperature detectors must be completely heated to alarm temperature and therefore a disastrous lag in time may occur with a fast rate fire. Rate -of -rise devices, on the other hand, are triggered by the rate of increase in ambient temperature and are subject to false alarms caused by harmless, transient thermal gradients such as the rush of warm air from process ovens. SHELL -HIGH EXPANSION CONTACTS (OPEN( STRUTS -LOW EXPANSION_ FIGURE 1 READY The secret of the unit's sensitivity is in the design (Figure 1). The outer shell is made of a rapidly expanding alloy which closely follows changes in surrounding air temperature. The inner struts are made of a lower expanding alloy. Designed to resist thermal energy absorption and sealed inside the shell, the struts follow temperature changes more slowly. A slow rate fire (Figure 2) will heat the shell and struts together. At the "set point," the unit will trigger, actuating the alarm or releasing the extinguishant. A transient rush of warm air up to 40F°/min. may expand the shell, but not enough to trigger the unit. By ignoring transient warm air excursions, the DETECT -A -FIRE unit virtually eliminates false alarms prevalent with rate -of -rise devices. If a fast rate fire (Figure 3) starts, the shell will expand rapidly. The struts will close, actuating the alarm or releasing the agent. The faster the fire rate of growth, the sooner the DETECT -A -FIRE unit will react. The attractive, functional design lends physical protection of the unit while making it suitable for commercial, industrial, mercantile and public buildings, institutions and ships in non -hazardous locations (those classified as "ordinary" under the National Electric Code). Rush mounted units are designed to fit standard 4" octagonal electrical boxes and surface mounting units are designed to mount directly on ceilings or on 4" electrical junction boxes. Canadian Electrical Codes requires mounting only to an electrical junction box. VERTICAL DETECT A -FIRE -UNITS Vertical detectors are designed for use in both "ordinary" or "hazardous" locations. For "ordinary" use, they may be mounted to any approved junction box with 7/8" diameter opening by using 1/2-14 NPT mounting nuts. The device may be wired in or out of conduit, depending on local preference and codes. Four leadwires are provided on normally open vertical units (that close on temperature rise), per UL requirement, to facilitate supervision of system wiring. Instruments are Underwriters Laboratory and Underwriters Laboratory of Canada listed and Factory Mutual approved for hazardous locations, when mounted in a suitable fitting. MOUNTING DETECT -A -FIRE units are not position sensitive. Horizontal and vertical detectors refer to the most common mounting configuration for that unit. However, each type can be mount- ed either horizontally or vertically depending on the applica- tion and installation requirements. This detector incorporates- ad- vanced solid-state, low -voltage circuitry featuring SMT (Surface Mount Technology) and is designed for 2 -wire and 4 -wire in- stallation. The 360 degree smoke entry characteristic per- mits maximum smoke response from any direction. A unique sensing chamber design permits operation in air velocities up to 2000 fpm. The detector is designed for Open Area Protec- tion (UL 268) and Duct Applications (UL 268A). It may be installed in systems intended for Releasing Device Service through use of a compatible control unit. Detector base options are available to provide for auxiliary test, indication, and/or control functions. To assure that the detector is functioning, a pulsing LED (ap- proximately once every 4 seconds) allows for visual supervi- sion of the detector. Under alarm condition, the LED lights Effective: August 2002 FENWAL continuously at full brilliance. An optional base is available to provide remote LED function. A unique gated output circuit design provides improved stability and transient suppression. Special signal processing techniques verify the presence of smoke before the detector will alarm. The detector head is installed into the base with a simple twist -lock action. A locking feature is provided for vandal re- sistant security. A test magnet can provide a full functional test which simulates the effect of smoke (approximately 1.3% obscuration/ft.) entering the sensing chamber. This magnet test meets the requirements of the UL Sensitiv- ity Test Feature. An optional base is available for remote func- tional testing. In addition, the actual sensitivity of the detector may be moni- tored with a standard voltmeter and a special sensitivity tester (ST -001) that allows direct readout in % obscuration/ft. with- out the necessity of removing the detector. A new, improved fine mesh insect screen protecting the cham- ber area is used to avoid potential nuisance alarms. Optional bases are available for supplementary 2 -wire or 4 - wire relay functions. They incorporate state-of-the-art, solid state, low -voltage circuitry featuring SMT (Surface Mount Technology) and are designed for 2 -wire and 4 -wire installa- tion with the proper base. The detectors are designed for open area protection (UL 268) and for duct applications (UL 268A). They may be installed in fire protection systems and systems intended for releasing device service with commer- cially available fire suppression or detection control units, provided compatibility has been established. These models operate over a 10.2 to 36.8 Vdc range (2WB base only, 24 V nominal) with compatible control units. EMI/ RFI noise immunity up to 20 volts/meter assures virtual elimi- nation of false alarms from electrical interference. High signal-to-noise ratio permits a significant reduction in Tight baffling, thereby improving smoke entry characteristics Effective: August 2002 FENWAL while reducing nuisance alarms. The Fenwal photoelectric smoke detectors are, therefore, ideal for fire alarm and sup- pression systems service. The models PSD -7155 and PSD -7156 are set at a nominal sensitivity of 3.25% per foot smoke obscuration. The PSD - 7155P has a nominal sensitivity of 1.45% per foot. Sensitivity ranges can be measured in place using a voltmeter and a Fenwal meter (ST -001). Readings found to be within speci- fied limits are acceptable for normal field applications. The models PSD -7155 and PSD -7156 are rated for 0-300 fpm air velocity while the model PSD -7155P is rated for 0-4000 fpm air velocity. The model PSD -7156 includes a thermistor heat detector with 135°F (57°C) set point. Operation of the thermistor detector is independent of smoke detector circuitry. For releasing ser- vice applications, thermistor actuation electrically shorts the detector circuit and may be used to release suppressant. Base installation isboth simple and fast because of screw- type connections. The detector is fitted to the base by a twist - to -lock action. A removable locking tab secures the head to base to provide a high degree of vandal resistance. An extra fine mesh insect screen protecting the chamber area reduces potential nuisance alarms. Photoelectric detectors may be interchanged with Fenwal ion- ization detectors when using multifunction base configura- tion. Optional bases are shown in Table 4. ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS These detectors are designed for operation with control units and releasing devices having specific voltage and current char- acteristics that are compatible with the detector circuitry. The information provided under the heading CONTROL UNITS and Table 3 are intended to assist in proper application of the detector in a system.
