Cunningham, Fire Marshal Re: 166 Center Street Fire Alarm System Date: 04-24-2008 We have received one set of fire alarm plans for a three story building of which the tenant , J.M. Quality, Inc. will occupy only 1,800 sq. ft. on the first floor. No other build out is part of this project. The fire alarm has been designed around a Bosch D7024 Addressable fire alarm control panel. The proposed system will be extended beyond the tenant build out areas to include monitoring of the fire sprinkler control valves and fire sprinkler waterflow alarms. Notification will be provided inside the tenant space at the stairwell exits. Four duct smoke detectors will be provided an arranged for unit shutdown on alarm. No battery calculations were provided, but the submittal includes 18 AH batteries that are fully expected to provide suitable reserve power. Based on the review, we have the following comments: 1. It is not clear from the plans if the fire sprinkler system has a remote backflow preventer that would require valve tamper contacts. The Florida Building Code requires all fire protection control valves to be electrically supervised. If these valves exist, valve tamper with surge suppression at the building interface would be required. 2. We noted that one stairwell is provided with a horn strobe. As a point of interest, while this is still permissihle under the current NFPA 72 and Life Safety Code, the use of strobes in stainNiells questionable. The presence of strobes increases the probability of injury to occupants during an emergency as the strobes increase the potential for tripping. It is permissible to leave the device as designed. Subject to Comment 41, we recommend that the pians be accepted. Please give me a call if you have any questions.
