CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairman Tim Grady at 3: 10 p.m. Other board members present were Ernestine Butte, Martha Crusey, Harry Ernst, Mary Jenkins and Geraldine Vavrek. Also present were Mayor Joe Salamone, Leo Nicholas and Isabel Escapa, library director. Mary Jenkins was introduced as the new alternate member of the Library Board, appointed by City Council. II. MINUTES Minutes of the February 9, 1993, and March 2, 1993, meetings were approved as submitted. III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. Circulation of materials increased 11 percent in frebruary, 1993, and 24 percent in March, 1993, compared to the same months in 1992. B. Marice Scarborough,who was with the Eau Gallie Public Library, has been appointed children's and reference librarian. She was selected from 47 candidates. C. Books ordered: 634 children's and adult books for $12, 159 from Baker & Taylor; 30 reference books costing $2,503 from Gale; 20 reference books costing $985 from Wilson; eight reference books costing $429 from Bowker. Also with supplemental money, World Book Encyclopedia and 287 paperbacks were purchased. D. A small water heater for the sink in the staff lounge will be installed with money from the Fines and Fees Account. E. The American flag was stolen recently and two flagshave been ordered. The city will be asked to install the flag without ropes. F. The first auction of gifts donated by area businesses was held March 27, 1993, by Friends of the Cape Canaveral Library, raising $842 to purchase computer software to make signs and to add books to the Stellar Sellers collection. LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES APRIL/Page 2 G. A total of $15,000 will be transferred from the Fines and Fees Account to buy books and equipment. H. The Brevard County Library Board will recommend to the County Commission a $219,974 budget for Cape Canaveral Public Library during Fiscal 1993-94, including an additional $5,000 for books and equipment. IV. OLD BUSINESS Mrs. Escapa presented sketches by a city employee for building a storage area for children's materials and used books in the Meeting Room. The board concluded that the proposal would eliminate too much space in the Meeting Room and asked that the proposed storage area be relocated and reduced substantially in size. V. NEW BUSINESS The board decided to dedicate the Reference Room in honor of long-time board member Hilma Goff. Mayor Salamone will preside at dedication ceremonies during a luncheon on April 24, 1993,honoring library volunteers, who will be presented certificates recognizing their service. The luncheon will be paid for with funds from the Library's City Trust Account, the board voted unanimously. VI.
