CALL TO ORDER. Dr. Grady called the meeting-to order at 2:00 p.m. A. Approval of Minutes Geraldine Vavrek made a motion to accept the minutes as submitted, The motion was carried, the minutes were accepted. B. CORRESPONDENCE 1. Customer survey response forms for March 2000 were distributed. Surveys contained nice comments regarding staff. 2. Mr. Gorge Reid, Library Board Member, submitted his resignation letter from the Cape Canaveral Public Library Board effective March 15, 2000. Mrs. Evelin Reid resigned as the Chairperson of the Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public Library. Thank you letters were sent to Mr, &Mrs.Reid for their contributions and support to the library. C. DIRECTOR'S REPORT 1. Monthly Report of Library Activities Circulation decreased a 9%. 2. Activities and Events 3/17/00 Malice Scarborough, Youth Services Librarian,attended Youth Services Meeting at Central Brevard Library & Reference Center. 4/03/00 Isabel Escapa attended Library Director's Meeting at Central Brevard Library & Reference Center. 4/05/00 All the staff.nembers of the Cape Canaveral Public Library attended the Star Program Kick-OffiReception at the Government Center in Viera, JUL-06-2000 07:35 CAPE CANAUERAL LIBRARY 407 868 1123 P.04 Stellar Selters//Videos, DVD, Audio Books At the last Library Director's Meeting it was approved that if a video, DVD, or audio book is new to your collection, it can stay in the Stellar Sellers collection for up to six (6) months, after which we must move it into our regular circulating collection. National Library Week-April 9-15, 2000. Brevard County Libraries are having a drawing daily with donated prizes by different businesses;tom the Brevard County. There are nice prizes from Durango Restaurant, Papa John's Pizza,Tupperware, books, etc. Patrons get a daily entry form by checking out books, videos, etc. We have a winner every day and then we will send all the entries that were entersd daily to Mary Ann Alderman, Community Relations Manager. She will have a drawing for each area North, Central, and South for two day and one night stay at local hotels. Youth Services Department has a Word Find Contest. This contest is open to school-age children in grades 1 at thru the 6th. The child with the most correct answers well receive a book prize. National Library Week Authors' Program Three (3) local authors will offer this program on Thursday,April 23, at 2:00 p.m. in the Cape Canaveral Public Library Meeting Room. Marian Lippert author of "Walking on Central Boulevard" will discuss her family's search in both traditional and alternative medicine,which helped her daughter with ALS amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Her important message is that with the search comes hope. Author, Bill Hahn, will describe his writings of poetry in "The Window Box." Anna Brown MecConmachie, author of'Defining Moments: An Anthology, "will explain the process of how her personal writings became the makings of a book, and how she got it published. National Volunteer Week April 9-15 The Friend;of the Cape Canaveral Public Library will offer a lunch for the volunteers tomorrow, Wednesday, April 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the Florida Seafood Restaurant in Cocoa Beach. Thay will also offer a lunch to our staff members on Friday, April 14 at our staff lounge. Joanna Atwood,Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public Library Chairperson, and June Bell, Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public Library Vice-Chairperson, and Isabel Escapa will be attending a Brevard County Library Training Session"Trends&Changes for Volunteers and Staff'on Friday, April 14 at the Central Brevard & Library Reference Center. JUL-06-2000 07:30 CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY 407 868 1103 P.05 Board's Appreciation Dinner The Board Appreciation Dinner by the City of Cape Canaveral will be on Saturday, May 6, 2000 at 6:00 p.m. in the Radisson Hotel in Cape Canaveral. If you have not received an invitation by this Friday, please call Sandra Sims in.the City of Cape Canaveral Clerk's office at 868-1221. Staff Lydia Colon, Library Assistant I at the Circulation Department, was promoted to the Circulation Supervisor at Suntree/Viera Library. She was a full-time staff who had been transferred from the Merritt Island Public Library. We are going to get a twenty-five (25) hours part-time Library Aide from the Merritt Island Public Library. This twenty-five (25) hours parr-time Library Aide position is the one that we originally had before Mrs. Colon was transferred to our library. Kimberly Cooper, twenty (20) hours part-time Library Page will start working on Monday, May 1 at the North Brevard Public Library in Titusville. She wanted more hours and to be closer to her house. Beth Schrader, thirty (30) hours part-time Library Aide submitted her resignation effective May 19. She is going back to her work line where she gets paid more money. Compact Disk Display Case A compact disk display case was purchased with the money donated to the Endowment Fund in memory of Dr. Richard Young. A plaque will be placed to honor Dr. Richard Young' s aupport and service to the library. Gates Incentive Computer Program The Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public Library purchased a Gates computer for the Youth Services Department. A plaque will be placed to thank the Friends for this donation. II PERSONAL APPEARANCES Jackie Coates, Business and Cultural Development Board Member of the City of Cape Canaveral,informed the Brevard Watercolor Society will present a "Watercolors by the Sea "indoor art show on Saturday, May 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m at the Cape Canaveral Public Library Meeting Room. This show will be co-hosted by the City of Cape Canaveral and the Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public Library. Admission is free. An invitation oriy gala opening of the show will be held on Friday evening,May 5 from 5:00 p.m. t:o 7:00 p.m. The City of Cape Canaveral will be providing snacks, refreshments, and wine. JUL-06-2000 07:31 CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY 407 868 1103 P.06 IIl. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Budget FY 2000-2001 The revised budget shows the Cape Canaveral Public Library secretarial position which five (5) additional hours had been added were cut. The secretarial position will remain the same twenty (20) hours part-time. Dr. Grady expressed thar the secretary's position should be a full-lime position. The Cape Canaveral Public Library and the small libraries' book budgets were reduced to $4,000. The Brevard County Library System bigger libraries'book budgets were reduced to $8,000. Rocky Randels,Mayor of the City of Cape Canaveral, asked how could the City of Cape Canaveral help in the Library's needs. Budget Workshop for the FY 2000-2001 will be offered to the Brevard County Library Board by Frank Vestal, Accountant Brevard County Library System Wednesday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m, at the Cocoa Beach Public Library. Board members are invited. B. Foundation Update The Foundation continues growing. A list of the members of the Foundation was distributed to the Board. C. Impact Fee Study It is on the Brevard County Commissioners Agenda for today, April 11 at 9:00 a.m. D. STAR Program Kick-Off Reception The STAR Program was a success. Two hundred sixty-seven staff members from the Brevard Count Library System attended the Reception. We had an opportunity to learn more about the STAR program which is an award system to recognize staff and volunteers. We also met other members of the other libraries and saw"the face behind the phone". Brochures explaining the STAR Program were distributed to the Board. IV. NEW BUSINESS There was no new business. V. ANNOUNCEMENTS The next Cape Canaveral Public Library Board Meeting will be held Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cape Canaveral Public Library Meeting Room. The next Brevard County Library Board Meeting will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at 5: 00 p.m. at the Cocoa Beach Public Library, 550 N. Brevard Avenue, Cocoa Beach, FL 32931.
