FRIENDS and FOUNDATIONS NOW ELIGIBLE for TAX EXEMPT STATUS
Senate Bill 338 has passed, thereby exempting all IRS 501(c3)organizations from
paying sales tax on their purchases. The Legislation leaves in place a current law,
Florida Statute (Section 212.0821), which encourages groups to make purchases
through their library's county or city government thus insuring that groups too
small to have IRS (c3) status continue to have a way to make purchases without
paying the tax. The new law takes effect January 1,2001. While the legislation
permits organizations to obtain exemptions from Florida sales tax on purchases, it
does not affect their tax status when making sales_ Florida Statute (Section
212.05) requires Florida Friends organizations to collect and remit sales tax when
they sell things to raise money to support the libraries. Rules of the Florida
Department of Revenue allow these organizations to have up to two sales annually
without having to administer a tax.

Cost effective alarm.
NEW BUSINESS
A Governor Bush has a plan to cut 25% staff from every state agency in the
next five years. This will not impact us directly. He is also planning to
reduce all the State Aid Budget 5% a year. The Brevard County Library
system reduction will be approximately $86,000. This can mean reduction
in staff and recurring costs. It will hit every Iibrary in Florida. Bush
will look thrifty, but it will affect our patrons. It is important for Board
members and Friends to write or to petition the governor and legislators
before Library Day 2001, March 26-27, 2001. The friends will try to
compose a post card which patrons could send requesting support of the
library funding.
B. Grant Books from NASA
NASA has given the Brevard County Library System a grant of $8,000.
for the purchase of science books for every library in the system.
C. Joanna Atwood reported that the November Book Sale generated
$2,670. We thank all the volunteers and the library staff who worked to
make the sale a success.

was passed. The December meeting will be canceled
&, Jim Brown's motion, seconded by Joanna Atwood, that the officers of the
Library Board remain as they are presently for the year 2001 passed.
