June 9, 1998
Attendance:
Tim Grady, Library Board Chairperson
Leo Nicholas, Library Board Member
Rocky Randels, Mayor
Geraldine Vavrek, Library Board Vice-Chair
Barbara Sims, Friends of the Cape Canaveral Library Treasurer
Isabel Matos-Escapa, Library Director
I. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by Library Board Chairperson, Mr. Grady.
II. PERSONAL APPEARANCES
Barbara Sims attended the meeting to voice a complaint about a parking problem that
took place on Saturday, June 6. The Union Hall had a meeting going on and there were
approximately 400-500 vehicles, some of which filled up the Library Patron and Staff
parking lot at the Cape Canaveral Library. Barbara said she was in the library that
morning and there were very few patrons who came in. She assumed that it was due to
the difficulty in finding a place to park.
In order to alleviate this situation, Mr. Randels stated that he will discuss it with the
person in charge of the Hall, and follow up with a letter. A motion was made by Mr.
Nicholas to put up a sign for the employee's parking lot. Mr. Grady seconded the motion
and it was passed unanimously. Mrs. Escapa will make the necessary arrangements to
get a sign or signs designating the south parking lot for "Cape Canaveral Staff Parking
Only."
III. REGULAR ORDER OF BUSINESS
A. A motion made by Mr. Nicholas and seconded by Mr. Grady to approve the
minutes as presented passed unanimously.
B. Correspondence: Mrs. Escapa reviewed correspondence from Mr. Treverton
submitting his resignation. Also mentioned was a "thank you" letter to Mrs.
Escapa and Mr. Grady from Mr. Harry Ernst. A memo was received from the
Chairperson of the City of Cape Canaveral Commercial Development Board
inviting chairpersons of all Advisory Boards and soliciting participation on the
"Wednesday-Friendsday" to be held of July 1, 1998. Mrs. Escapa stated that
excellent customer surveys were received from two Cape Canaveral Library
patrons.
A $500 donation was received by the Friends of the Cape Canaveral Public
Library from Mr. Richard Dorsett.
C. Directors Report
IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Plaque for the Library Expansion
Following a discussion of the value of historical veracity,Mrs. Vavrek moved
that the original plaque be placed in its original location. Mr. Grady seconded the
motion which passed, rescinding a motion passed at a previous meeting. Mr.
Nicholas expressed a negative vote, feeling that the plaques would make a more
effective display all in one location. A motion by Mrs. Vavrek, seconded by Mr.
Grady, that the Irene Sanders' plaque be placed in its original location, was
defeated. Mr. Nicholas moved that the Irene Sanders' plaque be hung in the new
inside lobby where it can be displayed with pictures of Mrs. Sanders and other
Library Directors. Mr. Grady seconded the motion which passed. Mrs. Escapa
said a nice picture of Mrs. Sanders had been found.
B. Youth Services Desk
Library Interiors and Kitchen Designs are two possible sources for a Youth
Services desk. As there were no prices yet from Kitchen Designs, the topic was
set aside for discussions at a later date.
C. State Funds
Mr. Randels reported on the monies granted to Brevard County from state funds
which will not be earmarked. The County Library Board will have to apportion
the funds.
V. NEW BUSINESS
A. Frames for Artwork in the Library
Mr. Randels stated he would like to buy frames for the paintings that are
presently on easel stands in the Library. Mr. Grady will ask Mr. Hernandez to
check with the artists to ensure that this is acceptable to them. If so, Mr. Randels
will proceed to buy frames.
B. Ongoing Problems with Birds at Library Entrances
Mrs. Escapa brought up the fact that the birds were still nesting at the entrances to
the Library, causing problems with droppings. She mentioned that the Cocoa
Beach Library had installed a soffit material to eliminate the problem. Mr.
Randels said that he would take it as an action item to see that the soffit was
sealed, and that the birds were located elsewhere.
C. Landscaping around the Library
The question was raised regarding the maintenance of the landscaping around the
Library. At present, the City of Cape Canaveral has a contractor who mows the
grass once a month, and the maintenance man from the Library picks up cigarette
butts. However, there is no coverage as far as landscaping is concerned.
D. Mrs. Escapa expressed her concern about people driving up to the drop-off
window, and the danger that it presented to library patrons. The possibility of
using plants to deter this was discussed. Mr. Randels stated that he would handle
this action item.
A motion was made by Mr. Grady to use available money from the City of Cape
Canaveral for landscaping and picture frames. The motion was seconded by Mrs. Vavrek
and passed unanimously.
VI. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Joanna Atwood, Secretary Dr. Tim Grady, Chairperson
