Turtle nesting season in Brevard County (and all counties south) is from March 1 through October 31 – not May 1. 2). The City cannot initiate the beach raking program until after contacting the beach monitors and then waiting 65 days for all nests to be marked (includes the training session). 3). The permit expires on July 15, 2009 – must renew every year. 4). Nests must be marked with tape - three-feet in diameter around the nest. 5). The tractor or beach rake cannot put greater than a two-inch rut (maximum) in the sand – tires must be 10 PSI or less. 6). The City’s permit covers from monument R2 in the north to R12 in the south (City limits). 7). The FDEP has stated that dead seaweed on the beach can be collected using the beach rake – they have no opinion on this matter. 8). There are to be NO excavations on the beach during turtle nesting season – including the burial of dead sea life. 9). Catastrophes will be handled on a case by case basis. As an example, dead fish from red tide – the City should contact the FDEP to get approval to use the beach rake as well as to bury the dead fish on the beach. 10). When government representatives are asked to get involved (i.e., Tony Sasso), the issue involved is forwarded to Tallahassee and receives twice the amount of scrutiny/review/comments, etc.
