The meeting was called to order at 5:07 p.m. by Chairman, Bob Gorham.
Harvey Renshaw made a motion, seconded by Colin Finnegan, to approve
the minutes of the July 22 meeting with the following additions:
The Youth Center Grand Opening, with minor cook -out to follow, will most
likely be September 14. Recreation Board members volunteered to assist.
Mayor Porter suggested a volunteer painting party for August 31, with a
cookout to follow and requested our participation. Motion passed by
unanimous vote.
The Board reviewed the Parks & Recreation Department August treasurer's
report.
The Recreation Director's report included an update on the FRDAP Grant:
Restroom renovation will begin within 2 weeks and the bid package is out
for the electrical work to change the poles and light fixtures on the
senior ballfield.
A lease has been sent to Ms. Mosher, owner of the lot on Longpoint
Road where the City plans to build a small neighborhood park.
The fall program brochure has been distributed in the community. Among
the upcoming special events are a Kite Making Workshop on October 5
and the Halloween Haunted Forest which has been changed from October
31 to October 30.
Unfinished business item was to set a date for the 1997 Patriots' Day
Parade & Celebration. Motion was made by Bill Schmidt, seconded by Harvey
Renshaw, to keep the event on the second Saturday in March (8th). Motion
passed by unanimous vote.
Todd Peetz, City Planner was present to discuss
of the Comprehensive Plan. Members requested a
review. Mr. Peetz will supply, Nancy will mail
the Recreation Element
"clean copy" to
to members.
Steve Roney reported that there are 24 beach teams participating in the
fall soccer program with approximately 10% coming from Cape Canaveral.
Ms. Hanson reported on the Youth Center activities noting that, to date,
the only problem has been the groups of youths outside the building
smoking cigarettes. A new employee, Bruce Webber, has been hired
and the Youth Center will be open on Friday & Saturday evenings from
6:30-9:30 p.m. for 13-17 year olds.
