It was noted that a quorum of the Membership was not present and, accordingly, no official actions or votes would be conducted. Members present opted to review scheduled items on the agenda for informational purposes. Approval of the Minutes of the Board's June 22, 1997 Meeting was deferred until the next scheduled Board Meeting. The Recreation Department's Financial Report was noted without comment. Recreation Director Nancy Hanson gave her report of on -going and planned activities. Highlights included: - The annual Spring Fling Racquetball Tournament was successful as was the semi-annual children's fishing contest. - The Community Safety Awareness Day program was cancelled due to inclement weather and could not be rescheduled due to the many agencies involved. - The Pool Splash and Team Sports and Playground Games in the summer recreational program were discontinued due to lack of participation. - Attendence at the expanded hours for the Youth Center (until school starts) has been exceeding 500 children per month. - The Racquetball Court exteiior, Recreation Center and Maintenance building have been painted. - Bikeway signs are being erected, completing the S50,000 FRDAP grant. - Tree -trimming and fencing for the Long Point Neighborhood Park is scheduled and play equipment has been ordered. - The city's tennis courts will be resurfaced in August. The Recreation Director was requested to secure a copy of the Management Plan for Manatee Sancuary Park and distribute copies to each Board Member for review and comment. A work party is tentatively scheduled for August 16th to assemble play equipment under the supplier's direction at the Long Point Park. CAPE CANAVERAL RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING July 28, 1997 (Continued) Plans still need to be firmed for the seven (7) acre area now identified as Banana River Park. Board members will be asked to identify needs for this facility and to assist in seeking sources for grant money to develop it accordingly. Then have been community requests for and some investigation by Brevard County and various beach municipal governments into a Skateboard Park or facility. Recreation Director Nancy Hanson distributed copies of letters discussing the liability and insurance factors associated with such a facility; Board Members are asked to become familiar with the issue and remain tuned to any further community interests or commercial plans for same. It is a continuing subject before the joint Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral Council committee meetings. Chairman Bob Gorham adjourned the Meeting at 5:55 P.M.
