HomeMy WebLinkAboutcocc_proclamation_black_achievement_in_space_day_20200228Official Proclamation City Of Cape Canaveral, Florida WHEREAS, the City of Cape Canaveral recognizes the achievements of Blacks in Space, and the important role that African Americans have performed in the success of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Program (NASA) in the United States; and WHEREAS, the City of Cape Canaveral honors all Black Achievements in celebration of and during Black History Month, and today recognize black women and men, to name a few, who played key roles in the early days of the Space Program and beyond; and WHEREAS, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson were celebrated in the 2016 book written by Margot Lee Shetterly and movie of the same name "Hidden Figures"; and according to NASA history, the black women were "human computers" who began careers as schoolteachers, soared mathematical heights by performing equations and calculations by hand, and it was their brilliant work that propelled the first American, John Glenn, into orbit in 1962; and WHEREAS, Cape View Elementary School, Cape Canaveral, Florida is home to the Captain Winston E. Scott Science and Technology Center, so named for the retired United States Navy Captain, former NASA Astronaut, Florida State University graduate and Miami, Florida native; and WHEREAS, Captain Scott was selected by NASA in April 1992, served as Missions Specialist on Space Shuttle missions in 1996 and 1997, logged a total of 24 days, 14 hours and 34 minutes in space, including three spacewalks; and WHEREAS, the City of Cape Canaveral recognizes these are just a few examples of the service and contributions made by African Americans to the country's Space Program; and WHEREAS, the City of Cape Canaveral acknowledges and supports the efforts and contributions of African Americans in NASA's Space Program; and NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Robert E.
