RE: Beach Wave Complex — Shell Building -Fire Sprinkler Plans
Contractor: Coleman Fire Protection, Inc., West Melbourne, FL
Engineer of Record: Gaylon Claiborne, F.P.E. #58238
Dear John,
We have received one set of fire sprinkler plans for the above referenced project. We have conducted a third party
fire plans review on these drawings, calculations and submittals.
The proposed project is a retail shell space that is to be protected by a wet pipe sprinkler system with 147 total
sprinklers. I verified by phone, with John Coleman, owner of Coleman Fire Protection that the sprinkler heads will
be installed in 1 inch outlets with short sprigs to allow future build -out of the tenant spaces. The system design will
provide a density of 0.20 gpm/ft2 over the hydraulically remote 1,500 ft2. The calculations show an approximate
safety factor of about 15 psi. The fire riser for this building will be a "shotgun" type and will have no control valve.
The backflow valves at the street will be used to control water to the system.
The Coleman work begins at the stub -up of the underground piping in the northeast corner of the building.
We have the following comments:
1. Although beyond the scope of the fire sprinkler contractor, the installer of the underground fire mains needs to
provide a means to allow an annual full forward flow through the backflow at a rate equal to the sprinkler water
demand or higher (358 gpm). (Reference NFPA 13 -2007 Paragraph 8.17.4.6.1)
2. The general contractor needs to have the fire alarm contractor coordinate getting a buried conduct and
conductors out to the backflow device to allow the addition of valve tamper switches that must be monitored by
the fire alarm system.
The scope of work by the fire sprinkler contractor is acceptable and we recommend that the plans be permitted. It is
suggested that the two comments above be forwarded to the general contractor to avoid issues further along in the
project.
Sincerely,
Brian R. Foster, F.P.E.,
Florida Certified Fire Safety Inspector,
President

Quick Response Sprinkler
Product Description
Reliable Models F1FR56, F1FR42, FIFRXLH & FlFR28
Series Sprinklers are quick response sprinklers which
combine the durability of a standard sprinkler with the
attractive low profile of a decorative sprinkler.
The Models F1FR56, F1FR42, FIFRXLH & FlFR28
Series Recessed automatic sprinklers utilize a 3.0 mm
frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers have demonstrat-
ed response times in laboratory tests which are five to
ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This
quick response enables the Model F1FR56, F1FR42,
FIFRXLH & FlFR28 Series sprinklers to apply water to
a fire much faster than standard sprinklers of the same
temperature rating.
The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled
amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a pre-
cisely manufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is
specially constructed to provide fast thermal response.

At normal temperatures, the glass
bulb contains the fluid in both the
liquid and vapor phases. The vapor
phase can be seen as a small bub-
ble. As heat is applied, the liquid
expands, forcing the bubble smaller
and smaller as the liquid pressure XLH Recessed
increases. Continued heating forces Pendent FP
the liquid to push out against the bulb, causing the glass
to shatter, opening the waterway and allowing the deflec-
tor to distribute the discharging water.

Application
Quick response sprinklers are used in fixed fire protection systems: Wet, Dry, Deluge or Preaction. Care must be
exercised that the orifice size, temperature rating, deflector style and sprinkler type are in accordance with the latest
published standards of the National Fire Protection Association or the approving Authority Having Jurisdiction. Quick
response sprinklers are intended for installation as specified in NFPA 13. Quick response sprinklers and standard re-
sponse sprinklers should not be intermixed.

After installation, inspect all sprinklers to ensure that there is a gap
between the cover plate and ceiling and that the four cup slots are
open and free from any air flav irrpedimert to the space above.
Concealed cover plate /cup dies are listed only for use with
specific sprinklers. The use of any other concealed cover pkait%up
assen lbly with the Model F1 FR56 Pendert Sprinkler or the use cf the
Model CCP Concealed cover plate assembly on any sprinkler with
which it is not specifically listed my prevent good fire protection and
will void all guarantees, warranties, listings and approvals.
Glass bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to minimize
bulb damage during shipping, handling and installation. REMOVE
THIS PROTECTION AT THE TIME THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS
PLACED IN SERVICE FOR FIFE PROTECTION. Removal of the
protectors before this time may leave the bulb vulnerable to dam-
age. RASCO wrenches are designed to insta11 sprinklers when
covers are in place. REMOVE PROTECTORS BY UNDOING THE
CLASP BY HAND. DO NOT USE TOOLS TO REMOVE THE PRO-
TECTORS.

Maintenance
The Model F1FR56, F1FR42, FIFRXLH and Model F1FR56,
F1 FR42, F1 FRXLH & F1 FR28 Recessed Sprinklers should be in-
spected quarterly and the sprinkler system mairtained in accor-
dance with NFPA 25. Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water,
amrrlonia or any other cleaning fluids. Remove dust by using a soft
brush or gertle vacuuming. Remove arty sprinkler which has been
painted (other thanfactory applied) or damaged in anyway. A stock
of spare sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick replace-
ment of damaged or operated sprinklers. Prior to installation, spnn-
klers should be mairtained in the original cartons and packaging
to minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers that would cause
improper operation or non-operation.

False Alarm Immunity. The WFD series incorporates a mechanical retard fea-
ture, which minimizes the risk of false alarm due to pressure surges or air
trapped in the sprinkler system. In addition, the mechanical retard's unique
sealed design is immune to dust and other contaminants.
Simplified Operation. The WFD series is designed to simplify installation. Two
conduit openings permit easy attachment to the local alarm system. The retard
mechanism and dual SPDT switches are field - replaceable.

Engineering Specifications
Vane -type waterflow detectors shall be installed on system piping as designated on the drawing and /or as specified herein.
Detectors shall mount on any clear pipe span of the appropriate nominal size, either a vertical upflow or horizontal run, at least
6" from any fittings which may change water direction, flow rate, or pipe diameter or no closer than 24" from a valve or drain.
Detectors shall have a sensitivity in the range of 4 to 10 gallons per minute and a static pressure rating of 450 psi* for 2" - 8"
pipes. The detector shall respond to waterflow in the specified direction after a preset time delay which is field adjustable. The
delay mechanism shall be a sealed mechanical pneumatic unit with visual indication of actuation. The actuation mechanism
shall include a polyethylene vane inserted through a hole in the pipe and connected by a mechanical linkage to the delay mech-
anism. Outputs shall consist of dual SPDT switches (Form C contacts). Two conduit entrances for standard fittings of commonly
used electrical conduit shall be provided on the detectors. A grounding provision is provided. Unless noted, enclosures shall be
NEMA 4 listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. All detectors shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. for indoor or out-
door use.
