Cape Canaveral Vision Statement
We envision: A bikeable and walkable Cape Canaveral that retains and enhances its welcoming
residential feel, characterized by low-rise buildings. This residential and business friendly atmosphere is
a livable, attractive, safe, inclusive and sustainable coastal community that embraces the oceanside and
riverside as the main amenities, and supports and promotes local tourism, culture, recreation, commerce,
municipal civic interests and education.
We envision: A City network of"complete streets" with a native-landscaped and tree-lined median
with traffic calming elements and dark-sky street lighting. "Complete street" amenities include
bicycle facilities, covered transit stops and safe pedestrian crossings that invite pedestrians and
bicyclists to access the beach, river, local neighborhoods and adjacent communities. Our
improved"complete streets" will allow us to travel calmly to intimate waterfront destinations and a
walkable uptown core. Multi-use paths lined with shade trees should be wide enough for bikes
and pedestrians and lighted so anyone can walk or bicycle safely anywhere in town, day or night.
We envision: Welcoming community entrance features that create a sense of arrival and
unique community identity as The Space Between"'. The "uptown" and other areas will contain an
architecturally rich and unique mix of uses, with wide tree shaded sidewalks and umbrella covered caf&
tables at restaurants and bistros where friends gather, interact and enjoy drinks and dinner.
We envision: An engaged and compassionate community that; removes or transforms blighted and
unfinished buildings into attractive structures, offers City-wide green spaces, provides a pet-friendly
park with ample shade, acts progressively but deliberately and actively recruits and supports businesses
that enhance economic viability and serve our residents and visitors with goodwill.
We envision: Open shorelines and rivers accessible to the public including amenities that
take advantage of the water, such as limited and quaint water-view establishments and intimate
public gathering and entertainment places that may include pavilions, gazebos or a performance stage.

Progress continued as the Economic Development Director, Code Enforcement, the City Attorney and
the Ocean Woods Homeowners Association (OWHOA) met to discuss the City's vacant Ridgewood
Avenue Extension, easements, buffer zone and land clearing.
Survey markers prove that the OWHOA natural beach path is outside of the City's property, with the
exception of a small portion near the north end. East of this area, the beach path is lawfully located
within an access easement throughout the remainder of the City's property and across the neighboring
property to the beach. The City is considering divesting itself of the Ridgewood Avenue Extension and
OWHOA has requested a portion of the property in order to maintain a vegetative buffer along the path.
The surveyor has been tasked by OWHOA to create a survey sketch of the northernmost property
boundary. This will be utilized for a land-clearing permit issued by the City to OWHOA to remove an
impenetrable overgrowth of Brazilian pepper trees that is significantly affecting the neighborhood's
ability to adequately drain stormwater. This will enable the reconstruction of swales and other
stormwater system repairs. A condition of the land-clearing permit will require replanting of the buffer
zone area to create 80-percent opacity within two years, for the visual enjoyment of both Ocean Woods
and abutting Harbor Heights residents. We ask that all parties impacted be patient and understanding of
the needs of OWHOA while the work is underway.

Business Tax Receipts were issued to Island Woodwerx, Rocket Gym and Third Wave Coffee.
• Sale and purchase correspondence regarding vacant property adjacent to Center Street was
forwarded to property owners. The property has a long and narrow shape with a utility easement
roughly down the center. The City would like to purchase this property at appraised value in order to
construct stormwater improvements to further protect the Indian River Lagoon. Upon City Council
and owner approval, grant funding would be utilized to construct the stormwater improvements.
• The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO) Bicycle and Pedestrian Master
Plan Steering Committee is hosting a series of public meetings to gather input and public comment
on walking and biking improvements in Brevard County. The first meeting is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00

Please welcome Jessica Bunnell, Laboratory
Manager assigned to the Community Services
Department. Awarded a Bachelor of Science
degree in Biology from Maryville College,
Jessica began her career as a Senior Chemistry

comes to the City with nine years of experience.
We look forward to Jessica's work in
contributing to our mission of environmental
excellence and sustainability!
Thank you to the Florida League of Cities and the City of Satellite Beach for a great day of social
media training last week! The Community Engagement Specialist, City Planner and City Clerk

while doing it!), plus some very important tips about public records and the Sunshine Law.
Along those lines, we want to remind everyone of our social media terms of use. Please click here
and scroll down to the third section to read them. Thank you!

Cape Canaveral has been the gateway to worlds beyond our own for more than half a century. And
now, as the world prepares to celebrate the 501' anniversary of mankind's first steps on the moon,
the City of Cape Canaveral celebrates 50 years of the world knowing its name. Prior to the 1960s,
this small coastal community was virtually unknown to all but locals, fishermen and the army of
aerospace workers that were busy putting the"space" in"Space Coast." So not surprisingly, the
City of Cape Canaveral is taking this anniversary seriously - and because the legacy of man's first
steps on the Moon cannot be summed up in a single day's parade, the City has decided to celebrate
this anniversary with a series of public art projects, Community events, youth activities and more,
all counting down to that memorable morning in July.
Stay tuned to the City's website and official social media pages for updates and join us as we
celebrate our Community's unique vantage point in mankind's journey to the moon.

Like many municipalities, the City of Cape Canaveral is looking to revamp the drab and defaced
traffic control cabinets along its major thoroughfares. To help with this, the City has issued a Call
for Artists, inviting artists to submit designs that will be utilized to wrap the cabinets at selected
intersections throughout the City. Many of which are located at highly visible comers along North
Atlantic Avenue and SR AIA.
To make this public art project uniquely Cape Canaveral, it is part of the 4SummerOfSpace
celebration, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing - a noteworthy historical
event with indubitable ties to the City. Submitted designs must reflect Cape Canaveral's role in the
history of space exploration and the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. This competition is open
to artists of all ages and no residency restrictions apply. The deadline for submissions will be
Monday, January 28, 2019. For more information visit www.cityofcuecanaveral.org/civicscenely

With the holidays now behind us, we turn our Crime Prevention focus back to some of the crimes that
have a tendency to target us all year long if we are not careful. With that said, "lock your doors" is a
Crime Prevention Message we hear on a regular basis, but often think doesn't apply to us because we
live in a safe community. Unfortunately, today's thieves target neighborhoods across the state and
country looking for just one thing...cars that have been left unlocked. Once inside they steal anything
and everything, including computers, electronic items, briefcases, wallets, firearms, keys to other
vehicles and even your garage door opener. Some of the perpetrators are so bold they use the garage
door opener to gain entry into your house while you and your family are asleep inside.
The good news, is that locking your car ` r"
doors in one of the easiest and fastest
ways to protect yourself against
becoming crime's next victim. By
locking your car door in your front
yard you are making yourself a hard
target and not an easy one for today's
criminals.
While you don't have to go to the
extreme like the car in the photo,
taking two extra seconds to lock your doors keeps you from being a victim and sends criminals
away angry, disappointed and empty handed.
