CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Grady at 2:10 p.m. Board members present were: Chairman Grady; Vice -Chairperson E. Butte; Pat Stenglein, Sect.; Hilma Goff; Gerry Vavrek and Harry Ernst. Absent: William Blankenship. Also present: Isabel Escapa, Library Director; Rocky Randels, Councilman; Leo Nicholas, Concerned Citizen. 11.MINUTES: Minutes were accepted as read. 111. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: A. Monthly Statistical Review: 0% over this time last year,reflects._. the changes which have taken place as a result of computerization within the library system. B. Activities and Events: 9/11 Attended ground -breaking ceremony at Satellite Beach. 9/10 Joan Salomon and I attended Technical processing meeting at CBL&RC. 9/27 Attended Longevity Award ceremony and presented to Carmen Bern. .son a five year plaque. 10/4 Participated in the Defensive Sure Driving Workshop at Port St.John Public Library. 10/5 Attended Library Director's meeting at CBL&RC. C. Adult Card Catalog: All cards have been removed from the card catalog. Lynn Walsh from Sebastian called to indicate that she is interested in purchasing the two units which we have. One is in City storage. Patrons have been receiving additional instructions and special attention in the use of the on-line catalog. D. Budget Proposal: At the last budget hearing, one million dollars was taken from constitution and assigned to the Brevard County Library System. Budget FY 1991 amended requests will be presented to the Brevard County Library Board and then to the Brevard County Commissioners. If it is approved, we will get an additional $15,000.00 for books, $4,000.00 for non -book videos, $3,000.00 for office equipment and a personal computer and software. They will also purchase 3 Eiki Color Video projectors. One will bear.: C C LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES OCT. p/2 the North area, one for Central and one for the South area. This wider projector projects on any screen or flat surface up to 62ft. wide. It would eliminate the purchasing of a large T.V.. Libraries that have requested part or full time positions for this year will be getting their additional staff. E. Literacy Program: Jim Smith, Secretary of State, will be at the CBL&RC, Oct., 25th., at 11:00 a.m., for a press conference.He is advocating "Join Hand's for Literacy Phase 11 " for Brevard County. He will try to get the co-operation of local businesses for this program. Library Board members are invited. F. Dial In Terminal Lines: Two dial -in lines are available for IBM compatible dial access to the Brevard County Library System On-line Catalog. Telephone numbers are: 633-1826, 633-1829. At the present time the. dial access is available only when the library system is open. G. Videos: Patrons will be able to check out three videos for two days, effective on Monday, October 29th. Paula:;Ballester,from Indian Harbour Beach, will repair our videos for one dollar. A written agreement is pending. H. Christmas Party: Our traditional Christmas party for the children once more will be hosted Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 10131 Cape Canaveral. It will be held Saturday, December 15th. They will let us know the time. I. Library Promotion: Joan Salomon was promoted from Library Aide to Library Assistant 1. Beside working the Circulation desk, she is my technical processor. She has been working with the library since 1981 and is a very valueable employee. J. Interior Walls: G&S contractors sent last week two representatives from Sherwin Williams. They inspected the walls and insist that it is a moisture problem. They were supposed to return for a moisture testing but did not show up, I left a message for Randy Hearn. K. Brevard County Employees Picnic: Will be held Sunday, November 4th., at Wickham Park Pavillion from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cost is $2.00 per person and must be purchased in advance. Let me know if you are interested. L. Adult Program: This started Friday, Oct., 5th. We had an attendance of seven. They really enjoyed making beautiful flower arrangements. Press releases have appeared in the Florida Today and the Tribune, Mrs. Goff has helped distribute programs througout the community. Many thanks to her. NEW BUSINESS: Ernestine Butte suggested that it would be a good idea to have a driving course as presented by the North Brevard Senior Assoc. (AARP), given at Cape Canaveral Library. The Director will look into this. It was also suggested that an art exhibit given by Joyce Soucoup, be shown at the library. Mrs. Escapa said there were some security problems to be solved before proceeding with that. Book Sale: It was decided that the Book Sale will be held on Nov., 10th.,1990. Motion by E.Butte seconded by Gerry Vavrek. Passed. C C LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES OCT., p/3 OLD BUSINESS:: There was a discussion about Books by Mail as to how tbe'system-could be changed. The Director said this has been discussed with the County and the present method is deemed to be satisfactory. Discussing publicity for the library, E. Butte suggested it might be possible to have voter registration at the library. Mrs. Goff suggested that Lin Bennett, Reference Librarian, should be commended for her excellent work with the Children's Programs at the library and her organization of the current Fall program.
