CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairman Tim Grady at 4:20 p.m. Board members present were Harry Ernst, Hilma Goff and Mr. Grady. Absent were Ernestine Butte and Geraldine Vavrek. Also present were Patricia Stenglein and Isabel Escapa, Library Director. II. MINUTES Approved as submitted. III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. Monthly reports for April and May showed a 14 percent gain in April over the previous year and a 11 percent decline in May. B. Mrs. Stenglein was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the Library Board as a long-time member. She was presented a book that will be placed on the library shelves in her name, "The Reader's Companion to American History;" a certificate of appreciation, and a plant. C. The City of Cape Canaveral has been granted permission to install electricity to light the flag in Veterans Memorial Park and at the Library, which will enable the Library to fly the flag at all times. Space also has been allocated in the City Hall Annex to store items donated for the annual Book Sale. D. Rockwell International has donated a book, "Florida: From the Beginning to 1992." E. Repairs have been made to the air-conditioning system. G. Special programs include a summer program for children ages 8-12; a Red Cross "Safe Babysitting" course; an adult film series from June 18 through July 29. H. The Board voted to contribute $100 from the Library's City Trust Fund for a party on August 21 to begin the "Read the Zoo" program for children in grades 1-5. LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES JUNE/PAGE 2 I. Mott labels also will be collected, with 25 cents to be contributed to the Library for each label to buy books. J. The Library will receive an Optelec machine that magnifies reading materials sixty times for the visually impaired under the Assisted Reading Devices Grant. K. The Board decided to review the proposed By-Laws of the Friends of the Cape Canaveral Library, Inc. at the Board's July meeting. L. The Board reviewed the Building Accessibility Report concerning handicapped patrons that resulted from a February 22 inspection under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. Among the findings were the toilet doors and stall doors missed the mark by one or two inches in width; the public telephone doesn't comply; listening devices are needed in the Meeting Room; and signs identifying services for the handicapped need to be displayed. It was suggested that shelves need to be placed in the restrooms and by the public telephone for the convenience of patrons. IV. OLD BUSINESS There was none. V. NEW BUSINESS There was none. VI.
