CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairman Tim Grady at 4:01 p.m. Other board members present were Ernestine Butte, Harry Ernst, Hilma Goff and Geraldine Vavrek. Also present were Mayor Joy Salamone, Council members Ann Thurm and Rocky Randalls, Leo Nicholas, Evelin Reid, Patricia Stenglein and Isabel Escapa, Library Director. II. MINUTES Minutes of the July 14,1992 meeting were approved as submitted. III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. The July and August reports of library activites showed a slight decline in library usage. B. The "Read the Zoo" program to encourage more children to read was a success, with more than 144 children and their parents participating. C. The attached letter was received from Mrs. Stenglein in response to the tribute given her for her service on the Library Board. D. The attached policy was adopted by City Council concjerning the attendance of alternate members at city board meetings. E. A total of 303 books have been purchased at a cost of $4,030. F. All library space has been utilized with the addition of three shelving units for young adult books in the children's area. G. New handicapped parking signs will be installed. H. Fifty-three video cassettes for adults and thirty-five for children were purchased with private funds raised by the annual book sale or contributed to the Library. I. Luck of the draw enabled the Library to obtain an Ellison Cut-Letter machine from the Central Brevard Library. J. September programs include a story hour for children and a film series for adults. A craft program is planned in October and November. LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES SEPTEMBER/Page 2 K. A donation of $80 in memory of Mr. Grady's Mother was sent by June Sims and friends to the Brevard County Book and Endowment Fund to purchase books. IV. OLD BUSINESS There was none. V. NEW BUSINESS A. Mrs. Thurm was honored for writing the history of the City of Cape Canaveral with a plaque installed in the Library, a potted plant and a book dedicated to her and given to the Library entitled "The Meaning of Life." B. Mrs. Reid and Mrs. Stenglein reported that Friends of the Cape Canaveral Library, Inc. has conducted a successful membership drive and would hold a flea market on September 26 in the Library Meeting Room. C. Mr. Randalls presented copies of the 1992-93 City Budget, pointing out that it contains $35, 187 in the Library Fund for building repairs. D. Mr. Ernst suggested the the Library Director ask the central staff to determine if some of the Meeting Room space might be utilized for future library expansion. VI.
