F. National Library Week: It will be held on April 14 through 20. This
year's theme is, "Kids-Who Read Succeed". We are sponsoring a children's
bookmark contest, (grades 1 thru 6). All drawings must be original. The
winning selection will be printed with the child's name, and they will
receive a handfull of bookmarks. Selection of the winner will be made by
the Library Board members.
G. Telephone Books: Cape Canaveral City and the Brevard County have set up
bins for recycling. A receptacle has been placed at our library. The
response has been overwhelming.
H. Budget: The enclosed budget was presented to the Brevard County Library
Board by Kathy Stewart, Library Services Director. A 15% increase was
approved. A letter will be sent to the Brevard County Commissioners to the
effect that our allowance for additional personnel was submitted. These new
positions are vital to service. Job justification for Cape Canaveral
Library was enclosed.
In the county, hire freeze was lifted., -
I. Library Water Damage: Edward Spenik, C C City manager, sent this memo
regarding the library water damage. He also provided us -with_-formica
samples, for the walls. I discussed with him whether it was going to be
10 working or 10 calendar days closing. It is going to be five consecutive
days. The cleaning and the shampooing of the carpet is part of the job.
It is the contractor's responsibility. We will have to give plenty of notice
to the public prior to closing. We will have to give three weeks notice
and five weeks for them to return books. Barbara Simms will be taking
vacation at that time. Joan and Carmen will go to Central Technical Processing.
IV.OLD BUSINESS:
Mr. Spenik's memo of March 12, to Chairman Grady and also his memo to
the Board of March 26, were discussed. Both letters addressed the problem
of the Library water damage. The Aetna Insurance Co. has agreed to pay
$12,102.29 towards repairs. The estimate of repairs is approximately $15,000.00.
Purportedly, the city had signed-off on the construction job when it was
completed and had accepted the building. A motion was made by E.Butte and
seconded by Hilma Goff that the Board expresses grave concerns with this
situation and with the types of repairs that are being done by the contractor.
Library closing: A notice to the public at least three weeks in advance.
N.B. The Board approved the color Orchid Ha7e to be used if the formica is
applied to the walls.
Friends of the Library: The Librarian will continue her survey and this
matter will be on the fall agenda.
It was suggested that a Book Sale could be held before the closing. Date
to be decided.
