CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY
NOVEMBER, 12, 1991
1. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Tim Grady at 2:10 p.m.
Board members present were: Tim Grady, Chairman; Pat Stenglein, Sect. ;
Harry Ernst and Gerry Vavrek.
Absent: Ernestine Butte, Vice-Chairperson; Hilma Goff and Paul Acson.
Also present was Isabel Escapa, Library Director.
2. MINUTES:
Accepted as read.
111. DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
A. Monthly Statistical Review: October - 20% gain over previous year.
B. Activities & Events:
10/23 Lynn Bennett and I attended Basic DOS & Acquisition Modules,
(Baker & Taylor System) training at at CBL&RC.
10/29/30/31 Lynn Bennett attended Lotus & Work Perfect Training at CBL&RC.
11/1 Attended Library Director's Meeting at Eau Gallie Library.
11/4/6 Attended Lotus & Work Perfect training at CBL&RC.
C. Assistive Reading Devices: This is a grant which will provide an
Assistive Reading Devices Collection for the patron/consumer to be
given the opportunity for hands-on experience with the devices before
making purchase decisions.There are 40 items that can be checked out.
They are included in the on-line catalog. They will be circulated for
three weeks. They can be checked out two at a time and will be kept
behind the Circulation Desk.
D. American Disabilities Act: This will be in affect on January 26, 1992.
We will be purchasing Telephone Communications Devicesto provide
reference service to our deaf patrons. Shelving Reference cannot be
higher than 42", Magazine shelving 55", for a person Sitting in a
wheelchair.Sliding doors for the front entrance or a doorbell must be
installed. The cost for the sliding doors is $12,000.00. Meeting rooms
will have to equipped with special equipment,which will be a transmitter
and a receiver. Also required will be four public phones and one must
be a TDD. If any re-modeling is done, it becomes a requirement. Signers
at the programs will become mandatory. Companion dogs are allowed in
the Library. People can sue even if they do not need the services themselves.

E. Food for Fines: Will be held through November 17th. , to the 23rd. Other
fees will not be waived. It will be one item per item. (flyer).
F. Space Coast Authors: Two articles were published about this matter (display
of local authors works) are brought to the attention of the board. Display
cases were bought by the Brevard County. Not all libraries have this display.
G. Computers: We got our personal computer. Hewlet Packard Jet Laser Printer,
Lotus, Work Perfect 5.1, Nutshell, Print Shop & Print Shop Library
Companion. Recommend writing a letter to Mrs. Karen Nelson, LASDD, who
was the one responsible for acquiring this wonderful equipment.
H. Book Sale; Was held Nov. 9, from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. It was set up by the
Library Board Members and Volunteers. We made $302.00. I do want to extend
my appreciation to all concerned. Suggest written guidelines be set down
for future reference.
IV. OLD BUSINESS:
Tim Grady provided catalogs and information concerning the new computer
table. The Director is considereing one from Advanced Business Services
at a cost of $238.24, which falls within proposed guidelines.
With reference The Friends of the Library Assoc. , Harry Ernst recommended
that Isabel confer with Evelyn Reid on the feasibility a group at Cape
Canaveral Library. Motion for the above was made by H.Ernst seconded
by Gerry Vavrek. Passed.
V. NEW BUSINESS:
There was a discussion of the BookSale. It was decided to hold the Book
Sale for two days next year. A motion was made by Harry Ernst that the
Book Sale next year be held on the first Friday and Saturday in November,1992,
preceded,'by .Thursclay for_setting up. The motion was seconded by Tim Grady.
Passed.*Isabel will also ask Mr. Spenik, City Manager, if he will again
donate the unsold surplus books to various institutions.
The Patriot's Parade will be held Mar. , 14, 1992. It will be expanded to
include crafts etc. with the possibility of another book sale at that time.
* Motion by Harry Ernst to donate the surplus books from the Book Sale
was seconded by Tim Grady. Passed.
VI. ANNUAL REPORT: This is moved to December for final review.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Motion by Tim Grady that Election of Officers be
postponed until December so that absent Board Members will be present.
Seconded by Gerry Vavrek. Passed.
VII.CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY: Will be held December, 14, 1991 at the library.
It is sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W Post #10131'.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Next County Library Board Meeting - Nov.13, 1991 at
5;00 p.m. - Central Brevard Lib. & Ref. Center.
Next Cape Canaveral Library Board Meeting- Dec. 16th. ,
at 4 p.m.
