CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chairman Tim Brady at 2:10 p.m. Board members present were: Tim Grady, Chairman; Ernestine Butte, Vice- Chairperson; Pat Stenglein, Sect. ; Gerry Vavrek, Harry Ernst & Hilma Goff. Absent: Paul Acson, Alternate. Also present was Isabel Escapa, Library Director. 2. MINUTES: Accepted as read. 111. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: A. Monthly Statistical Review: September - 25% gain over previous year. B. Activities & Events: 9/19 Lynn Bennett attended a Reference Librarian's meeting at CBL&RC. 9/27 Lynn Bennett attended a Children's Librarian meeting at CBL&RC. 10/1 Joan Soloman attended technical Processing Meeting at CBL&RC. 10/4 Attended Library Director's Meeting at Merritt Island Public Library. C. Computer Training: Lynn Bennett and I will receive training in Basic DOS, Nutshell Plus, Acquisition Modules for Baker & Taylor, Lotus 1, 2, & 3, and Word- perfect, starting on Wednesday, October 23rd. D. Satellite Beach had their Grand Opening Oct. , 21st. A plant was sent to them. Eau Gallie Library will re-open Sept. , 30th. E. Budget: There was a reduction of $2,500.00 for books & $666.00 for videos. Full length feature films cannot be purchased with Brevard Coounty money. Book Budget; $17,500.00, Recordings; $350.00, Videos (instructional) ; $334.00, Periodicals; $2,500.00. Total- $20,684.00. We will be able to start purchasing books on November 15th. F. State Aid Funding: (State Library Briefings) . They want the support from the Library Boards and Friends of the Library.It is suggested that letters could be written and , if possible, to attend The Florida Library Day on February 19th. , 1992, at Tallahassee. It was noted that some counties do not get State aid because they do not participate in a county system e.g. Polk, Sumter etc. C C LIBRARY MIN[TTES OCT. p/2 G. Thanksgiving Schedule: Brevard County Libraries will close Wednesday, Nov. , 27th at 5:00 p.m. They will re-open Saturday 30th. IV. OLD BUSINESS: There was short discussion of the purchase of suitable videos for the library. An Inter-Office Memo from Mrs. Schweinsberg, reviewing the criteria for this matter was brought to the attention of the board. The Objectives and policies are contained in Policy Number BCC-16. Mrs. Escapa reported that the roof leak problem seems to be under control at present. She will ask Mr. Spenik (City Manager) to check with the contractor for an inspection. Taking action on contacting Friends of the Library was tabled. V. NEW BUSINESS: The Beek Sale will be held Sat. , Nov. 9th. , from 9 til 4. We will be setting up the night before. Isabel will see that it is publicized in the newspaper. There was a short discussion regarding screens for the Meeting room . It was suggested that surplus books be stored in the closet currently used to store chairs. No definite decision was made. It depends on the number of surplus books left after the sale. Harry Ernst suggested that the books of author Nadine Gordimer be put on display in honor of her winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. Librarian Evaluation: Mrs. Escapa: received the unanimous acclaim oLthe Board. Discussion of the purchasing of a Portable Computer: Motion by E.Butte to spend up to $250.00. Seconded by Tim Grady. Passed. * Read table. Tim Grady will check prices before any action taken. VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Next County Library Board Meeting - Oct. 9, 1991, at 5 p.m. at CBL & RC.
