CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY BOARD
FEBRUARY 13, 1990
1. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order at 2:11 by Chairman Grady.
Board members present were: Chairman Grady; Mrs. Stenglein, Secretary;
Hilma Goff; Gerry Vavrek.
Board members absent: Ernestine Butte; George Farrell.
Also present were: Mrs. Escapa, Library Director; Leo Nicholas, City-
Manager; Councilman Mr. Randels.
11. MINUTES:
Motion by Hilma Goff seconded by Tim Grady that minutes be accepted as
read. Passed.
The minutes of the December, 1989 meeting, reported Gerry Vavrek as absent.
Gerry reminded the secretary that she was present. It is so amended.
111. DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
A. Monthly Statistical Review: Total percentage not shown over last year
due to library being closed for ten days during Dec. and Jan. while
moving. Hilma Goff suggested that more information should be available
to tourists regarding the county wide use of their library cards.
B. Activities and Events:
1/21 Attended Library Director's Staff and Processing meetings in CBLR.
1/23 Attended CLCAT training.
1/25 Ellen Marcus attended Children's Librarian meeting in CBLR.
2/4 Library Director's Meeting.
2/7 Barbara Sims and Mrs. Escapa attended a Technical Processing
Workshop in CBLR.
2/12 Barbara Sims and Mrs. Escapa attended a Circulation Workshop in
Port St.John.
N.B. CBLR refers to Central Brecard Library Reference.
C. CLSI: Cape Canaveral Library went on-line January 23rd. It has been a
very challenging and interesting experience for all involved.
It is more accessible and accurate than previously and infor-
mation is received more rapidly at the Circulation desk. This
applies to adding data to the database or finding a book or
material for a patron.
D. OPAC furniture was bought from the Eau Gallie Library and the other
three units will be bought from Interactive Learning Systems. The
price for each unit is $363.25.

E. Ordered 232 books from Baxter and Taylor for the amount of $3,920:00.
F. Cablevision of Central Florida installed Cable TV Service in our meeting room
without any charge. We thank Mr. Rocky Randels, Cape Canaveral City Council
member for making the proper arrangements.
G. Ellen Marcus handed in her work resignation to be effective on February 16.
She will start working Monday, Feb. 19, at Melbourne Public Library as a
Reference Librarian. She did an excellent job here and we all wish her much
success in her new position.
H. Joan Salomon, Library Aide, has not been able to work these last three weeks.
The doctor recommended that she stay in her house for a month due to illness.
She is planning to return to work this following Monday if the doctor gives
authorization.
DONATIONS: Mrs. Ann Thurm and Mr. John Porter, Cape canaveral City Council members,
closed their campaign accounts and gave the library $40:00 each. This
was deposited in the Library Trust Fund Acct.
DISPLAY: Amber J. Sailfish, a Cape Canaveral resident, did this month's display.
She called it, "Ships in Bottle". Her collection consists of 47 miniature
bottles. She also includes seversl fish which were preserved by her. She
calls this technique taxi- crochet-dermis.It is a unique display and I
think she should get some recognition.
AARP: This organization will meet Mon.-Wed.-Fri from 9 til 1 at the library.
to give tax assistance to patrons.
It is also noted that the Classic Movies series has had a good response.
IV. OLD BUSINESS:
Chairman Grady reported that he received a communication from a State-Wide
Friends of the Library Assoc. encouraging libraries to start their own groups.
He said he was neutral about the matter but reminded the Board of the amount
of work entailed in such an activity. He also reported receiving a letter from
the Governor's Office in Tallahassee last November. It related to a con-
ference to be held in Tallahassee to discuss plans for a National Conference
to be held in Washington, D.C. next December. The subject would be the general
betterment of Libraries.
V. NEW BUSINESS:
Chairman Grady showed the Board a copy of a letter to be sent to Elaine Sheridan
expressing gratitude to her for all her past volunteeer work for the Cape Can-
averal Libray. A certificate will also be sent to Elaine. The Board voiced
general approval.
An autographed copy of the book Warpath-Across the Pacific was shown to the
Board by Mrs. Escapa. It was presented to the library by Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Stenglein.

VI. ANNOUNCEMENTS:
There will be a meeting of the Brevard County Libray Board at the Central
Brevard Library and Reference Center at 7:30 p.m. on March 8, 1990.
The next meeting of the Cape Canaveral Library Board will be at 4p.m.
on March 13th. , 1990.
