MINUTES
CAPE CANAVERAL LIBRARY BOARD
DECEMBER 11, 1990
1. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Vice-Chairperson Ernestine Butte at 4:05 p.m.
Board members present were: Vice-Chairperson E.Butte; Pat Stenglein, Sect. ;
Gerry Vavrek; William Blankenship; Harry Ernst. Chairman Tim Grady was delayed
and arrived at 4:30 p.m.
Absent: Hilma Goff.
Also present:Isabel Escapa, Library Director; Mr. Spenek, City Manager and
Mayor Joy Salamone, Mr. Leo Nicholas was present as a concerned citizen.
2._ MINUTES:
Minutes were accepted as read.
111, DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
A. Monthly Statistical Review: 12% below this time last year. This is
thought to be due to the fact that Cocoa Beach Library was closed at
this time last year and Cape Canaveral patronage was temporarily increased.
B. Activities & Events:
11/15 Barbara Sims and Lynn Bennett_attended_a:.Supervisory-Discipline
Workshop. This continued through the 16th.
12/7 Attended Library Director's meeting at CBL & RC.
12/11 Joan Salomon attended Technical Processors Meeting.
C. Staff: Dorothy Walker, SCE Program worker, was transferred to Capeview
Elementary School this month. She has worked for us for a period of
four and one-half years. We will miss her.
D. Book Sale Leftovers: Patrick AirForce Base referred us to a phone
number in Washington, D.C. It is called the Defense Logistics Agency.
They indicated that they had a surplus of books to send overseas.
Pat Stenglein and Gerry Vavrek packed the books and they will be
stored at the Town Hall for future use.
E. Book Purchase: 286 books were purchased frau Baker & Taylor for the
amount of $3,259.00.
F. VFW Post #10131 & Christmas Party: The Ladies Auxiliary decorated the

Meeting roan and the Children's roan in the library. The Christmas Party will
be held on December 15th. at 11: a.m.
G. Donation: Gordon Clark, Granada House Apt. Manager, indicated that Jim De'line,
the owner and also owner of a business called Aerospace, is willing to donate
$1,000.00 on behalf of his tenants. He only asks that a Thank-You note will
be sent to each of his tenants. He will pay the postage.
H. Lynn Bennett's husband, Clayton, was recalled for active duty and has left
for Georgia. He will be going to Saudi Arabia. I would like to put up
yellow ribbons in our library to honor all the servicemen who are serving
their country.
I. Wall problem: William Early, Thoro System Products Technical Service Manager,
was here yesterday inspecting the premises.Bennett Bouche, C C City Comptroller,
joined him.
J. N.B. I am investigating how we can secure the meeting roan for exhibits.
!V. OLD BUSINESS:
Pat Stenglein reported that she had spoken to local artist Gloria McCurdy
about the criteria used in judging art exhibits for the library. Mrs. McCurdy
maintains that an artist must be judged by his or her peers for an exhibit
to be legitimate.
Mr. Spenek reported on the wall moisture problems within the library building.
He said there is a ten- year Warranty with the paint firm. After sane invest-
igation, a firm known as Coastal Products ( Building Engineers) inspected the
building and found other areas with moisture problems. Larry Bristow of Aetna
Insurance will take care of the ,problem.It is thought that the products used
were improperly applied.A report will be made available to the Manager.
Copies of the Fourth Annual Report. entitled Library of Cape Canaveral Book
Sale Collection. was handed out to the board members.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Next County Library Board Meeting will be January 10, 1991, at 5:30 p.m.
at the Central Brevard Library & Reference Center.
Next Cape Canaveral Library Board Meeting - January 8, 1991, at 2 p.m.
