Egg Hunts Saturday, March 31, 2018 was an exciting day for children in Cape Canaveral. The
City's decades old tradition of an egg hunt and visit with the "bunny" took place at Canaveral City
Park. Thousands of eggs were hidden throughout the park just waiting for little hands to pick them
up. Immediately following, guests had a chance to head to Manatee Sanctuary Park, 701 Thurm
Blvd., for a second egg hunt/event sponsored by Revive Church at Manatee Sanctuary Park
commencing at 11:00 a.m. The church's event lasted for the entire afternoon, culminating a very
special helicopter egg drop.

Communication Concepts, Inc. received the Business Appreciation Award for its 40 years of
service to the Cape Canaveral community. As an added bonus, fifty-one participants joined in for
the Mayor's Mile Community Walk, earning Team Cape Canaveral a few extra points in the 2018

the horn adding the proverbial icing on the cake! It was a beautiful day to celebrate Cape Canaveral
and recognize all the people and businesses that make The Space Between a great place to live,

of -a -kind yoga event is held at 10:00 a.m. in Patriots Park located at 200 Long Point Road in Cape
Canaveral. This session includes a complementary tour of the Community Garden afterwards. Cost
for this activity is $5.00 per child and parents are invited to join in for free. No previous yoga
experience is necessary and mats can be rented for $1.00 each. Participants are encouraged to bring
water, a towel and closed toe shoes for the Garden Tour.

lunch. Registration costs $60 per child for ages 2-4 years old and $90 per child for ages 5-15 years
old. Both age groups will receive a complementary camp T-shirt and the 5-15 year old program
includes a nutritious lunch. Camp activities will focus on soccer fundamentals and emphasize the
importance of teamwork, sportsmanship and developing healthy lifestyle habits. The last day of

Alberto Araujo at (321) 427-9636 or via email at kicksforhealthykids@gmail.com.
Free Summer Food Program —The City of Cape Canaveral will be a feeding site for the Summer
Break Spot meal program. A free meal will be offered to anyone under the age of 18 on Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday each week from 5/29-7/20. Serving times are still being decided
upon and will be advertised as soon as available. Lunch will be served at the Youth Center located
at 7920 Orange Avenue in Cape Canaveral. The program will start with 25 lunches distributed and
the number can increase upon demand. However, if 25 daily lunches can't be distributed, the
program will go away as it would not be economically feasible for the State to support. If you
know anyone child who needs a lunch or any parents that just want to visit the park for lunch and
take advantage, we strongly urge you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
Cultural Programs
19th Annual Student Art Show— The 19th annual Student Art Show was one for the record books!
With a total of 14 schools participating and more than 270 individual submissions, this year's show
was the largest one to date. New for 2018, the show featured two additional categories:
photography and 3-dimensional artwork, both divided by age group. While the students never fail
to impress, their submissions for these categories took the show to the next level and both
categories will be expanded and fine-tuned for next year. The increased number of schools and
expanded advertising for this event resulted in record setting attendance and library Staff was on
hand to engage the young visitors in a craft activity brought the family -friendly arts experience
full circle.

Bureau of Archaeology Hosted Big Reveal for Florida Archaeology Month —After several months
of high tech analysis, the "Irma Canoe" is finally revealing its secrets. Archaeologists and other
preservation specialists presented their preliminary findings at the Canoes and Archaeology event
on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee. For the many eager
Brevard residents that were not be able to attend, the Florida Division of Historical Resources
streamed these presentations and they are still available to viewers via their Facebook page:
httus ://www.facebook.com/FloridaDivisionofHIstoricalResources/.
The Irma Canoe is a one -of -a -kind cultural resource and a treasured testament to Brevard County's
rich Maritime heritage. As a barrier island community, canoes were an inherent part of Cape
Canaveral history for centuries before the construction of the modern causeways and dugout
canoes, like this one, were used well into the l9th Century by Merritt Island residents and early
beachside settlers. As such, the City is excited to announce that it will acquire the Irma Canoe for
temporary display in its Community Artifacts Room, eventually to find a more apposite home in
the City's Culture, Arts, Preservation and Enrichment (C.A.P.E.) Center upon completion.
City's Cultural Programs Manager Elected as Chair of the Brevard County Historical
Commission —The City' s Cultural Programs Manager has been elected to serve as Chairperson of
the Brevard County Historical Commission (BCHC). As an active member since March of 2015,
Ms. Thomas has written several articles for both of the Commission's local history publications,
assisted with the acquisition of two State historical markers, recorded and updated numerous
listings for the Florida Master Site File, and has served as a judge for the County' s youth history
fairs. She is currently working on the acquisition of a State historical marker commemorating the
century old S.F. Travis Co. building in Cocoa Village. Also, the upcoming 2018 Spring/Summer
volume of the BCHC's Indian River Journal, will feature the first installment of her new article
series discussing the Florida' s military history and its residual economic impacts that remain
visible on the Space Coast today. Ms. Thomas was honored by this appointment and looks forward
to furthering the BCHC's mission in preserving and promoting Brevard's invaluable cultural
legacy and representing the residents of District 2 therein.
Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Cottage Project Breaks Ground —Since 2002, the dutiful volunteers
with the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation have been working tirelessly towards their dream
of restoring the Keeper's Cottages that once surrounded the lighthouse. Among the first homes
built on the Cape and standing for nearly 75 years, these residences housed the families that
managed the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. Sadly, after the USAF acquisition of the property, the
structures were left vacant and eventually succumbed to the elements. Some sources suggest they
were used for fire practice in the 1960s and demolished soon after.
In October of last year, Brevard County Board of Commissioners approved TDC's request for
$500,000 in funding support of the project and with additional support from the 45th Space Wing,
the Florida State Senate and House of Representatives and other industry partners, the Foundation
broke ground on the project last week. The full scope of the Cottage Project will include a Replica
Cottage, Education Center and a Museum - Archaeology Center. Each building will be constructed
according to the plans for the original structures, as acquired by the Coast Guard in 1942, and the
designs for each structure have been prepared by Architects RZK, Inc., the same firm that received
the contract for the City's new Multi -Generational Center and C.A.P.E. Center.
To keep up with the progress of this amazing local heritage project, follow the Cape Canaveral
Lighthouse Foundation on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CCLighthouse/ or visit its website at:

Cultural Programs Manager Presents to Harris Corp Retirees Association —The Harris Corp
Retirees Association (HCRA) welcomed the City's Cultural Programs Manager, Molly Thomas,
to their monthly luncheon to make presentation on local history. As the audience was comprised
of individuals retired from assorted technology fields, Ms. Thomas geared her presentation
towards the technological trends that are impacting the field of historical research and how she's
applied them to local projects. The topic of her presentation was well received as the HCRA is
currently assisting with the development of a special archive at the Florida Institute Technology
to preserve the corporation's early contributions to the field of electronics and communication. A
fun fact that came up is that Radiation, a space satellite communication company that merged with
Harris in 1967, founded FIT in 1958 with classes being taught at the Radiation facility.
