ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS:
1. Approval of Meeting.Minutes of Auggst 10,2017
Motion. by Ms. Atwood, seconded by Mr. Weisfeldt to approve the Meeting Minutes of
August 10, 2017 as written. Vote on the motion carried unanimously.
2. Staff Reports
Ms. Wehking reported that we had hired a library aide who was with us one month before she
got promoted and moved to another library. The new library aide is Tia Thomas. She
volunteered at Cocoa Beach. in Youth, Services. Our Reference Librarian, Donna Murray left us
and moved to New York. She's now a Director at a library in Long Island, where she's
originally from. We are currently waiting for the requisition for the new Refi=nce Librarian to
post,
Cape Canaveral Library had no damage from the Hurricane, however, we had no power or water
and consequently were closed for 6 days. We have had numerous building issues lately,
especially with our air conditioning and city sewer line. We replaced one old a/c unit that was
no longer functioning in the staff work room. We had an air conditioner on the adult fiction side
of the building freeze completely and start leaking. Our carpet is stained, but the a/c has been
fixed,
The building was closed for 3 days due to the city sewer line collapsing. No plans could be
found for this building when it was built, so the city crew had to do some digging to find the
correct line. The sewer line and the water line for the fire plug were both repaired, the water line
that went nowhere has been capped off, we now have new clean out access to the plumbing and
the parking lot and sidewalk have been repaired.
Foot traffic was only down I% in October even with the hurricane closures. The County budget
for this year is status quo — no major cuts, but no increases.
The adult programming is starting up again. We just finished the Italian classes, which were
very well attended. Movie nights and the coloring circle are also starting again. We have
several programs coming up including a Mad Hatter Tea Party for the children November 141b, a
performance of the Nutcracker on December I I th, the Bead Ladies will be hold a class
December 4", and the Friends of the Library sale will be December 7h, 8" and 9th. There is also
a cooking program slated for January, and a seminar on Florida's Treasures scheduled for
February. The City Government week visit for the area kindergarteners that had to be
rescheduled will be held November 3 01h.
The book club is moving along. Ms. Weliking promises a non -scary book for December.
The Reference collection has been sorted through. Most of the books have been sold or added to
the shelves as available for check out. The reference books that have been designated "Library
Use Only" have been placed in a new bookcase located under the window in the reference
section. We received some new shelving from the Titusville library and we can now space out
the adult fiction and large print sections.
Ms. Wehking is involved in producing a training video for Florida Librarians on customer
service and reference. Auditions are on going. This video will be professionally made by the
Brevard Libraries staff.
The County Library Board meeting will be here on March 21, 2018. The Library Advisory
Board Meetings will be held in the new city hall once it's open. When the city vacates our
building, the Friends of the Library group will be: replacing what the city takes, which will
probably include a laptop and some tables.
The Library is not having an open house this year; Youth Services is only having the Nutcracker
for Christmas. The staff holiday party and the volunteer appreciation brunch will be held next
year.
Mr. Weisfeldt and Mr. Evans discussed the Free Little Libraries as they are stewards for two of
them. The city did take them down for the hurricane, but they are back up with no damage. The
books are rotated as much as possible. They will look for library books that were returned to the
Little Libraries by mistake.

Friends of the Library Report
Ms. Deck reported that the Friends of the Library finances ended up in the red this year, mainly
due to the: new sign ($12,000.00 in the red). Shelving was $1,500.001 , Youth Services programs
spent $4,000.00 and AV equipment/postage was almost $1,000.00. We made $3,000.00 in online
sales. Donna already setup the adult programming before she left. Amazon has implemented a
new double log in safety system that's been having some glitches.
The Friends of the Library Book sale preview day is December 7h 5 pm — 7 pm; the sale itself is
December g1h, 9 am — 5 pm and December 91h, 10 am — 2 pm. Ms. Deck mentioned that we need
all the help we can get for set up on December 701,

Mr. Moe asked how Cape Canaveral decides on what materials they purge and if the County
comments on these materials. Ms. Wehking has never heard anything trom the County on the
materials the library keeps or purges. As to deciding what materials to keep or sell, Ms.
Wehking looks at when the book was published, the usage history and, with children's books, if
the materials are award winners (i.e., Newbery, Caldecott books).
Meeting dates for next year at 2/8, 5110, 8/9 and 11!11. The location will be decided at a later
date depending on when city hall is available.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:10 p.m.
Approved on this 8th day of February 2018,
