ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS:
1. Approval of Meeting Minutes of May 11, 2017
Motion by Ms. Atwood, seconded by Mr. Holmes to approve the Meeting Minutes of
May 11, 2017 as written. Vote on the motion carried unanimously.
2. Staff Reports
The Summer Reading Program ended last week and was very well attended. Ms.Wilson and Ms.
Kincaid are doing a great job keeping pre-teen patrons engaged, especially this last week or so
before schools started again. There was not a lot of adult programming this summer. Bobbi
Brown, our watercolor teacher, has taken a new job and will not be holding classes here. The
music program for the fall in almost full. One more band is needed to fill out the schedule. If you
know of anyone, please get with Ms. Ernst.
Ms. Wehking handed out a list of adult programming scheduled for the next six months. We have
some new offerings such as Italian language classes(October),jewelry making(December), a chef
is coming in January and the adult coloring circle led by Ms. Bardin will be starting up again soon.
The door count has increased in the last five months. Reference services have been up nine of the
past ten months. It was a busy summer. There wasn't the big dip in attendance as there has been
in years past.
Two Library Aides have joined the Circulation staff— Orlando Sanchez and Kristen Drinkwater.
Steve McCall, also Circulation, was promoted, and Cara Kincaid is back with us in Youth Services.
One man was trespassed recently as he was frightening the Jehovah Witnesses outside the front
door, and saying some very odd things to the staff and patrons. There were some complaints about
a sign in a patron's car window, but there's not much anyone can do about it. Another A/C unit
broke and was fixed. All the county libraries will be getting digital signage in the lobby that can
be used for announcements, slideshows, etc. The wiring for the VOIP phones that all libraries are
getting was installed.
The Brevard County Library Board will hold a meeting in the Cape Canaveral Library on March
21,2018 at 4:30 pm. Ms. Wehking will e-mail a reminder to the Advisory Board Members a week
before the scheduled meeting date.
Mr.Vergara reported that the city is changing the date for Light Up Cape Canaveral. The city will
be combining this with Friday Fest. The city will have a new holiday lighting scheme.
The city was recently awarded a new playground at Manatee Sanctuary Park. August 26, 2017 is
Fido Field Day in Manatee Sanctuary Park. There will be food, canine demos, a small dog race
and a wiener dog race and many other events. The city may be making some parks "dog friendly"
and there might be a small dog park in the future. Plans for a pocket park with shower facilities
located at the end of Polk is in the very beginning phases. The chess pad has been finished at
Veteran's Memorial Park. There is a possibility of using part of the Veteran's Memorial Park for
an outdoor art exhibit. There are a lot of upgrades coming for all city parks.
Next year the city is looking at moving summer camp to the old city hall building. The plans for
the old city hall include art exhibits, classes and other cultural events. The city may be acquiring
Cherie Down Park. If so, they may add a small band shell for concerts. Mr. Vergara mentioned a
"dream project" using an old pink building on Polk. It's currently out of code, the Iiens and fees
are staggering, and the owner may have declared bankruptcy.
Little Libraries — Mr. Weisfeldt is the steward for the one at the community garden. This might
be something for the FOL to support.
Ms. Nicholas has been really impressed with the city in the last five years regarding the art and
culture improvements. The Space Coast Art Festival will be held in Cape Canaveral this year.
Friends of the Library Report
Ms. Deck reported that everything has been paid and there are no current projects. There is a
possibility of providing a laptop for the large meeting room once the city vacates. The FOL spent
$26,900 this fiscal year, the bulk of that being the digital sign purchase, shelving and the mural in
the children's area. At the moment, we have $10,700 in checking, with 3 CD's totaling $22,000.
The lobby sale is scheduled for Friday August 1$'h and Saturday August 19th,with set up scheduled
for August 17th. Ms. Wehking thanked Ms. Deck for almost single handedly running the FOL
program-
