WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR CITY? An agreement has been made between the city manager, David Greene and Don Haynes, a Cocoa Beach contractor and developer to pave Oak Lane. The city is going to spend about $250,000 to purchase adjacent land to allow for paving of the street and an additional hundreds of thousands of dollars to pave the street. In previous years landowners of the street were assessed an amount based on the front footage of their property in order to have the street paved. Several home owners on this street don't want the street paved and want it to remain in it's present state. There are only 8 homes on the street. Don Haynes, who owns about 3 acres at the west end of the street has made a deal with the city manager to have the street paved to his property, thereby greatly increasing the value of his property. What were the conditions of this one-way deal? In addition the city manager has agreed to change the zoning of his property from commercial to residential which would allow him to put about 42 homes on this property thereby increasing the value of his property by about 5 times compared to it's previous value. Since this agreement he has placed his property for sale for 1.5 million dollars. Why did the present council of Hoog, Walsh, Bond, Brown and McMillan give the city manager the power and authority to make these personal deals and not have to discuss the deals with them? The city manager at present is in total control of this city. A city manager who lives 20 miles away and who wasn't elected or selected by the residents of our city. He is an outsider who couldn't find a suitable home in this city. When he took this job he said he only wanted it for 5 years and he is now in his 6th year. The residents of this city vote a council to represent them but this council has chosen to have the city manager do their job and can make deals without their knowledge. 99% of all the city residents will never use Oak Lane so why should we use city funds to accommodate so few, namely 8 homes, several of which don't want it. City Council keep an open mind as to what is happening in our city. Ask the residents about these matters. YOU NEED TO TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR CITY and reject some of these deals that have been made. Individually council members examine your conscience, review the oath you have taken for your position and do what is right for the city. If you cannot, then do the proper thing and step down from your position. Very truly yours, Citizen Action Group COPIES SENT TO: Mike Holfeld, Channel 6 News, J.D.
